Habana Blues
''Havana Blues'' (''Habana Blues'') is a 2005 Spanish and Cuban film by Benito Zambrano which tells the story of two young musicians in Cuba. The film revolves around their music and contains criticism of problems in Cuba such as poverty and electricity outages. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. The two musicians, Ruy and Tito ( Yoel and San Martín), whose music is a mix of traditional Cuban music and more modern music such as rap, get a chance at an international breakthrough through a Spanish record company, but they would have to change their Cuba-themed lyrics to cater to an international audience. Ruy considers this a betrayal of his country and his art, whereas Tito recognizes the financial necessity of it. At the same time, Ruy is dealing with the fact that his children and their mother Caridad ( Sierra) are leaving for the United States. Art versus commerce, nationalism versus globalism, and communism versus capitalism are ...

The Havana Cultura Tour
The Havana Cultura Tour is a Cuban music concert tour, taking place in Ibiza (Spain) during summer. The first edition of the Havana Cultura Tour occurred in July and August 2008, featuring three artists from Cuba: a famous rapper called Kumar, an R&B style singer named Diana Fuentes, both accompanied by DJ Erick Gonzalez. Havana Club, the original Cuban rum brand, is the organizer of the event. Genesis of the event The project is born from a desire to promote Cuban contemporary music abroad, and especially in “the capital of subcultures”: the island of Ibiza. The idea was to mix different styles of music, in order to recreate the atmosphere of the descarga – jam session, an unofficial concert improvised in Havana and blending artists from different musical world, all improvising together. Musical style The three artists playing together created a style called “Urban Groove”, in reference to the jam sessions which often occur in the streets of Havana. It can be defined as ...

Early life Although now hailed by many as the most authentic rapper in Cuba, Telmary began life quite differently. Born in Cuba to a journalist mother and sociologist father, Telmary initially aspired to follow her mother into journalism. After her first time on stage, Telmary decided on another direction, seeking music, poetry, and singing as a more fulfilling form of communication. Telmary has also studied English language and literature, screenwriting and theatre. She cites her main goal in any of her endeavors as working towards better communication with her audience. Career Cuban music’s hallmark is its ability to draw from disparate parts of a range of musical styles to create a distinctly new whole, and Telmary’s music seeks to honor ...

Ojos De Brujo
Ojos de Brujo was a nine-piece band from Barcelona who described their style as "jipjop flamenkillo" ( hip hop with a little flamenco). The band sold over 100,000 copies of their self-produced ''Barí'' album and received several awards, among these the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award for Europe in 2004, having also been nominated in 2003. Their success is also notable for being achieved without the aid of label backing. They set up their own label, La Fábrica de Colores, to get complete artistic freedom for ''Barí'', away from the pressure they perceived from their record company Edel Records for their debut, ''Vengue''.c h i c a g o I N N E R V I E W

Piano
The piano is a stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material (modern hammers are covered with dense wool felt; some early pianos used leather). It is played using a keyboard, which is a row of keys (small levers) that the performer presses down or strikes with the fingers and thumbs of both hands to cause the hammers to strike the strings. It was invented in Italy by Bartolomeo Cristofori around the year 1700. Description The word "piano" is a shortened form of ''pianoforte'', the Italian term for the early 1700s versions of the instrument, which in turn derives from ''clavicembalo col piano e forte'' (key cimbalom with quiet and loud)Pollens (1995, 238) and ''fortepiano''. The Italian musical terms ''piano'' and ''forte'' indicate "soft" and "loud" respectively, in this context referring to the variations in volume (i.e., loudness) produced in response to a pianist's touch or pressure on the keys: the grea ...
