Kuala Belait Highway
Kuala Belait Highway ( ms, Lebuhraya Kuala Belait; Jawi: ليبوهراي کوالا بلايت) is a major highway in Belait District, Brunei. It bypasses the town centers of Seria and Kuala Belait, in addition to the Sungai Belait toll bridge, which is not present along the original route of the Pan Borneo Highway. Along the section of the original route of the Pan Borneo Highway between Kampung Sungai Teraban and Kampung Lumut, motorists may need to cross the Belait River via a river ferry service; therefore, the Belait River bridge at the Kuala Belait Highway enables motorists to cross the river directly without using the river ferry service which may become dangerous during bad weather. Kampong Sungai Teraban
Kampong Sungai Teraban is a village in Belait District, Brunei, near the district's principal town Kuala Belait. It has an area of ; the population was 1,082 in 2016. It is one of the administrative villages within Mukim Kuala Belait. Geography The village is located at the mouth of the Belait River, and on the opposite bank of the town centre of Kuala Belait. It is also the westernmost settlement in the country, near the Brunei–Malaysia border. History The village was initially known as . The name "Teraban" is believed to have derived from the Belait language-word which means 'a resting or stopping place' — it is believed that the area was once a stopping place for boats and ships on the way upstream to Kuala Balai which was once the administrative centre of what is now Kuala Belait. Kuala Belait
Kuala Belait (KB; Jawi: ) is the administrative town of Belait District, Brunei. The population of the town proper was 4,259 in 2016. Kuala Belait is officially a municipal area (), as well as a village under the mukim of the same name. The town is located west of the country's capital Bandar Seri Begawan, and west of Seria, the district's other town. It is also in the westernmost part of country, near the mouth of the Belait River. History In 1914, a road connecting Kuala Belait and Brunei Town was completed. Kuala Belait was a small fishing village at the turn of the 20th century. Pan Borneo Highway
Pan Borneo Highway ( ms, Lebuhraya Pan Borneo), also known as Trans-Borneo Highway or Trans-Kalimantan Highway ( id, Jalan Lintas Kalimantan), is a road network on Borneo Island connecting two Malaysian states, Sabah and Sarawak, with Brunei and Kalimantan region in Indonesia. The highway is numbered AH150 in the Asian Highway Network and as Federal Route 1 in Sarawak. In Sabah, the route numbers given are 1, 13 and 22. The highway is a joint project between both governments which started as soon as the formation of Malaysia in 1963 which comprised Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. The lack of a road network system in Sarawak was the main factor of the construction. Kampong Lumut () or commonly known as Lumut, is a coastal settlement in Belait District, Brunei, about from the district town Kuala Belait. The total population was in 2016. History Archaeological evidence found in Lumut suggests that human activity had existed in the area as early as the fourteenth century; Chinese and Siamese potteries dateable to the time corresponding to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) had been unearthed in the vicinity of the Lumut River. Seria () is a town in Belait District, Brunei, about west from the country's capital Bandar Seri Begawan. The total population was 3,625 in 2016. It was where oil was first struck in Brunei in 1929 and has since become a centre for the country's oil and gas industry. Name The name Seria is an acronym for the South East Reserved Industrial Area. In the past, Seria used to be known as , the local name which translates as 'Wild Pigeon's Field', and referred to the area between the Bera and Seria rivers. Belait River
The Belait River ( ms, Sungai Belait) is a river in Belait District, Brunei. It is the longest of the four main rivers in the country. History During World War II from 1941 onwards, the whole of Brunei was under Japanese occupation until 1945. On 26 May 1979, Borneo's only floating drydock arrived in Belait River. After being towed from Melbourne by a Japanese tug for 50 days, the 1943 Australian built drydock, formerly named AD 1001, was acquired by the Kuala Belait Shipyard. Sites Kuala Belait is one of the largest human settlements in the district in which the river passes through, while on the west bank lies the Kampong Sungai Teraban and Kampong Rasau.
