Kreis Birnbaum
Kreis Birnbaum ( pl, Powiat międzychodzki) was a district in Prussia (''Kreis'') in the west of the Grand Duchy of Posen and the succeeding Province of Posen, as part of ''Regierungsbezirk'' Posen between 1815 and 1920. Today the area belongs to the Polish voivodeships of Greater Poland and Lubusz. History The lands around the Greater Polish town of Międzychód had been part of the Poznań Voivodeship since the 14th century, they were annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia during the Second Partition of Poland in 1793. Part of Napoleon's titular Duchy of Warsaw from 1807, it was returned to Prussia at the 1815 Congress of Vienna. The district's borders were finally determined by resolution of 1818. The administrative seat from 1833 was at Zirke, from 1867 in Birnbaum itself. Along with the Province of Posen, ''Kreis Birnbaum'' became part of the German Empire in 1871. Kreis Schwerin an der Warthe ( pl, Powiat skwierzyński) was a district in Prussia, first in the southern administrative Region of Posen within the Prussian Province of Posen (until 1920), then within the Province of the Frontier March of Posen-West Prussia (until 1 October 1938) and at last as part of the administrative Region of Frankfurt within the Province of Brandenburg (until 1945). It presently lies in the western part of Polish region of Lubusz Voivodeship. History The district was formed in 1887 from parts of the Kreis Birnbaum. After the First World War, Kreis Schwerin and few more districts belonged to the truncated remnant of the Province of Posen remaining with the Free State of Prussia, Germany. Eduard Heinrich Flottwell (23 July 1786 – 28 May 1865; after 1861 von Flottwell) was a Prussian '' Staatsminister''. He served as ''Oberpräsident'' (governor) of the Grand Duchy of Posen (from 1830) and of the Saxony (from 1841), Westphalia (from 1846) and Brandenburg (from 1850) Provinces.
