Krabbendijke
Krabbendijke is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. History The village was first mentioned in 1187 as Crabbendic. The etymology is unclear. The original village was flooded in 1530 during the Saint Felix Flood. The current village developed after the Nieuw Krabbendijkepolder was created in 1592. The Dutch Reformed church is a T-shaped church with wooden tower. It was built in 1914 to replace its 17th century predecessor. The church was damaged by war in 1944. The café-restaurant De Koophandel is a 17th century building with mansard roof. Reimerswaal () is a Municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality in the province of Zeeland in the southwestern Netherlands on Zuid-Beveland, named after the Reimerswaal (city), lost city. Northern Lapwing
The northern lapwing (''Vanellus vanellus''), also known as the peewit or pewit, tuit or tew-it, green plover, or (in Ireland and Britain) pyewipe or just lapwing, is a bird in the lapwing subfamily. It is common through temperate Eurosiberia. Behaviour It is highly migratory over most of its extensive range, wintering further south as far as North Africa, northern India, Nepal, Bhutan and parts of China. Kruiningen
Kruiningen is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is located in the municipality of Reimerswaal, about 5 km south of the village of Yerseke.''ANWB Topografische Atlas Nederland'', Topografische Dienst and ANWB, 2005. Kruiningen has a station on the railway line Bergen op Zoom - Vlissingen. Kruiningen achieved some notoriety as departure and arrival of the ferry Kruiningen- Perkpolder. In 2003, this ferry closed in connection with the opening of the Westerscheldetunnel. History The place where Kruiningen was built, was one of the islands that later formed Zuid-Beveland. The area was diked by monks of the abbeys of Ten Duinen and Ter Doest. Kruiningen was hit hard during the Flood of 1953, 62 people died and the entire village came for six months under the influence of the tides. Mansard Roof
A mansard or mansard roof (also called a French roof or curb roof) is a four-sided gambrel-style hip roof characterised by two slopes on each of its sides, with the lower slope, punctured by dormer windows, at a steeper angle than the upper. The steep roof with windows creates an additional floor of habitable space (a garret), and reduces the overall height of the roof for a given number of habitable storeys. North Sea Flood Of 1953
The 1953 North Sea flood was a major flood caused by a heavy storm surge that struck the Netherlands, north-west Belgium, England and Scotland. Most sea defences facing the surge were overwhelmed, causing extensive flooding. The storm and flooding occurred at the end of Saturday, 31 January 1953 and morning of the next day. A combination of a high spring tide and a severe European windstorm over the North Sea caused a storm tide. The combination of wind, high tide, and low pressure caused the sea to flood land up to above mean sea level. Flooding summary In the Netherlands 20% of the land was below mean sea level (subsequently with the expansion of Flevoland this proportion has increased); the next-highest 30% sat at less than above sea level. Bergen op Zoom (; called ''Berrege'' in the local dialect) is a municipality and a city located in the south of the Netherlands. Etymology The city was built on a place where two types of soil meet: sandy soil and marine clay. The sandy soil pushed against the marine clay, accumulating and forming hills over several centuries.
