Kottarakkara (IAST: Koṭṭārakkara), also transliterated as ''Kottarakara'', is a town and municipality in the Kollam district of the Kerala, India. The town is close to Kollam Port, which has a rich history linked to the early medieval period as well as the reputation as an important commercial, industrial and trading center. Kottarakkara lies to the east of Kollam city centre. History Kottarakkara, also known in the ancient days of the kings as the Elayadathu Swarupam, was a principality ruled by a branch of the Travancore Royal Family. It is the home of Kathakali, a well known dance drama which originated initially as Ramanattam created in the 17th century by Prince Kottarakkara Thampuran and later patronized by the Raja of Kottarakkara in the early 19th century absorbing other dance forms of Krishnattam with further innovations. Kollam District
Kollam district (), (formerly Quilon district) is one of 14 districts of the state of Kerala, India. The district has a cross-section of Kerala's natural attributes; it is endowed with a long coastline, a major Laccadive Sea seaport and an inland lake (Ashtamudi Lake). The district has many water bodies. Kallada River is one among them, and the east side land of river is East Kallada and the west side land is West Kallada. Ramanattam
Ramanattam (Malayalam: രാമനാട്ടം, IAST: Rāmanāṭṭaṃ) is a temple art in Kerala, India. The dance drama presents the story of Rama in a series of eight plays and was created under the patronage of Veera Kerala Varma (AD 1653–1694) ''alias'' Kottarakkara Thampuran. Ramanattom is based on a story from the epic ''Ramayana'', covering the incarnation of Rama to the Rama-Ravana War, Ravana's defeat and Rama's crowning at Ayodhya. The story was written by Kottarakkara Thampuran and is divided into eight poetic sections so that each section can be enacted in one day. These eight sections are puthrakameshti, seetha swayamvaram, vicchinnabhishekam, kharavadham, balivadham, thoranayudham, sethubandhanam and yudham (war). Travancore
The Kingdom of Travancore ( /ˈtrævənkɔːr/), also known as the Kingdom of Thiruvithamkoor, was an Indian kingdom from c. 1729 until 1949. Chengamanadu, Kollam District
Chengamanadu is an Indian village in Kollam District of Kerala state. Etymology An age old legend about the origin of the name Chengamanadu goes like this: A prince of the then Desinganadu Kingdom went to Arabia and fallen in love with an Arabian beauty. He managed to elope with her back to his home land. But the girl's father traced their location and followed them to take her back. Knowing his arrival the lovers decided to leave the place and started off to Tamil Nadu via Aryankavu route in a single bullock ridden cart. On their way when they reached our place it was becoming heavily dark and the area was then a dense forest. There they met one woman named "Nangamma", she gave them refuge in her house to spend the night. The next day morning they continued their journey. Kathakali
Kathakali ( ml, കഥകളി) is a major form of classical Indian dance. It is a "story play" genre of art, but one distinguished by the elaborately colourful make-up and costumes of the traditional male actor-dancers. It is native to the Malayalam-speaking southwestern region of Kerala and is almost entirely practiced and appreciated by Malayali people. Kathakali's roots are unclear. Cherupoika
Cherupoika is a small village in the Kerala state of India. It is situated on the west side of Puthoor and in Kottarakkara taluk, in the district of Kollam and on the banks of the Kallada river. Etymology Tha name is derived from ''cheru'' (small) and ''poika'' (lake). Economy This small village is mainly dependent on agriculture. The area was covered with paddy fields, but most of these are now badly damaged by the mining of clay for bricks and a disappearing agricultural tradition. Old paddy fields are now big ponds and have converted this area into a big lake. In the near future, the area faces problems of unemployment, because of the shortage of clay for brick factories.
