Koreans In Cuba
Korean Cubans ( es, Coreano Cubanos, ko, 한국계 쿠바인, ''Hangukgye kubain'') are citizens of Cuba of Korean ancestry. Most of them are descendants of Korean immigrant farmers from Mexico who left to Cuba in search of a better life. Today about 800 descendants of the Korean farmers live around Havana, Matanzas and other areas of Cuba. History of migration The first ethnic Koreans to arrive in Cuba came from Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula in search of a better life. In 1905, 1,033 Koreans set sail on a cargo ship from Incheon to Yucatán. Upon arrival, instead of the riches they had promised, all they found was the most menial type of labor. They were sold to 22 landlords and became sugarcane and hemp (henequen) cutters, toiling from sun-up till sundown in the dry and harsh tropical sun. Most of them settled there as field hands. Jeronimo Lim Kim
Jeronimo Lim Kim (1926–2006) was a Korean Cuban who was known for being a part of the Cuban Revolution. He was a law school classmate of Fidel Castro. Early life Jeronimo's father, Lim Cheon-taek (1903–1985), left Korea in hope of a better life to go to Mexico. From Mexico, Cheon-taek went to Cuba in 1921. Jeronimo was the oldest of six children. He was the first Korean to attend university in Cuba. He went to law school at Havana University. Cuban Revolution Jeronimo worked with Che Guevara in pushing forth the Cuban Revolution. He helped foster relations between North Korea, and as a result North Korea and Cuba became strong allies. Legacy and later life Jeronimo became the Chief Agent at the National Revolutionary Police Force. He was said to be a non-ideologue who only wanted his people to do better. The demographic characteristics of Cuba are known through census which have been conducted and analyzed by different bureaus since 1774. The National Office of Statistics of Cuba (ONE) since 1953. The most recent census was conducted in September 2012. The population of Cuba at the 2012 census was 11.2 million. The population density is 100.7 inhabitants per square kilometer, and the overall life expectancy in Cuba is 78.0 years. The population has always increased from one census to the next, with the exception of the 2012 census, when the count decreased by 10,000. Since 1740, Cuba's birth rate has surpassed its death rate; the natural growth rate of the country is positive. Cuba is in the fourth stage of demographic transition. Japanese Cubans
Japanese Cubans are people of Japanese ancestry resident in Cuba. History The Cuban government first sought to recruit Japanese workers into sugar plantations in the 1880s, but the Japanese government refused to give approval on the grounds of the terrible working conditions of Chinese workers in Cuba. Subsequently, the first recorded Japanese person to settle in Cuba was in 1903. The first larger group of arrivals came from Mexico between 1910 and 1916, which would set a pattern for later decades, who were fleeing violence during the Mexican Revolution. They established an agricultural society in Carmelina. Later in 1916, 262 Japanese arrived. Most decided to get a job by harvesting cane. Chinese Cubans
Chinese Cubans ( es, chino-cubano) are Cubans of full or mixed Chinese ancestry who were born in or have immigrated to Cuba. They are part of the ethnic Chinese diaspora (or Overseas Chinese). History Chinese immigration to Cuba started in 1837 when Chinese (Cantonese and Hakka) contract workers were brought to work in the sugar fields, bringing the religion of Buddhism with them. Asian Hispanic and Latino Americans are Americans of Asian ancestry that speak the Spanish or Portuguese language natively and/or are from Spain or Latin America, respectively. Korean ( South Korean: , ''hangugeo''; North Korean: , ''chosŏnmal'') is the native language for about 80 million people, mostly of Korean descent. It is the official and national language of both North Korea and South Korea (geographically Korea), but over the past years of political division, the two Koreas have developed some noticeable vocabulary differences. Matanzas
Matanzas (Cuban ) is the capital of the Cuban province of Matanzas. Known for its poets, culture, and Afro-Cuban folklore, it is located on the northern shore of the island of Cuba, on the Bay of Matanzas (Spanish ''Bahia de Matanzas''), east of the capital Havana and west of the resort town of Varadero.
