Korean Indie
Korean indie, referring to independent music in South Korea, developed in the 1990s in Hongdae, an area of Northwestern Seoul. It is widely regarded as the counterpart to K-pop; whereas K-pop is characterized by a commercialized image targeting a specific audience, Korean indie emphasizes the authentic messages of musicians. Background South Korea's first modern wave of indie music began after the end of the military regime in 1987, coinciding with the rise of South Korea's popular culture during the early to mid-1990s. While experienced rock musicians tried to revive their musical careers, the younger generation developed a new punk and rock community in the Hongdae area of Seoul. New artists from this era include the bands Crying Nut, Pippi Band, and Seo Taiji and Boys. Jambinai
Jambinai () are a Korean avant-rock band formed in Seoul in 2009. Their debut album ''Différance'' won the award for Best Crossover Album at the 2013 Korean Music Awards. Their second album ''Hermitage'' was released in 2016 on Bella Union. During the 2018 Winter Olympics closing ceremony in Pyeongchang, Jambinai performed with an orchestra of geomungo players. Musical style Jambinai are known for combining rock music instrumentation (drums, bass guitar, electric guitar) with the use of traditional Korean folk music instruments ( haegeum, piri, geomungo). Baljunso
Baljunso (; stylized in all caps) is a South Korean indie label founded in 1991 by Kang Byung-yong, former director of CAN Entertainment. Baljunso was acquired by SM Entertainment in 2014. History Baljunso, an indie label, was established in 1991 by Kang Byung-yong, the former CEO of Can Entertainment, who discovered many artists such as Kim Jong-seo, Jang Hye-jin, Park Sang-min, and Can. Kang stated that the establishment of the record label is to revive hip-hop and band music associated with non-mainstream music genres rather than the idol music form that has been the foundation of influential K-pop. Antenna (Hangul: 안테나) is a South Korean record label founded by You Hee-yeol of the band Toy in 1997. Formerly an independent label, it was fully incorporated as a subsidiary under Kakao Entertainment in August 2021. Ssamzie Sound Festival was an annual indie music festival held in South Korea since 1999. The first version of the festival was held in Yonsei University, with 20 local bands performing. The festival started out as a free one-day-festival, but as the festival got more attention it grew. South By Southwest
South by Southwest, abbreviated as SXSW and colloquially referred to as South By, is an annual conglomeration of parallel film, interactive media, and music festivals and Convention (meeting), conferences organized jointly that take place in mid-March in Austin, Texas, United States. It began in 1987 and has continued to grow in both scope and size every year. In 2017, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days, music for seven days, and film for nine days. There was no in-person event in 2020 and 2021 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Austin, Texas; both years, there was a smaller online event instead. SXSW is run by the company SXSW, LLC, which organizes conferences, trade shows, festivals, and other events. Busan Rock Festival, inaugurated in 2000, is an outdoor music festival that takes place every summer in Busan. It is one of South Korea's longest running modern music festivals. The lineups accumulate acts of various genres such as rock, metal, indie. The admission was free of charge until 2019, when it transitioned into a ticketed event. Chang Kiha
Chang Kiha (; born February 20, 1982) is a South Korean singer-songwriter, actor, essay writer and radio host. He is best known as the lead singer of the indie rock band Kiha & The Faces. Early life Chang was born in Seoul on February 20, 1982. His father ran a manufacturing company, and Chang later said he did not experience any financial hardships growing up. Chang graduated from the prestigious Seoul National University. While in college, he played drums for the rock group Nunco Band. Gwanak District (Gwanak-gu) is an administrative subdivision (''gu'') of Seoul, South Korea. It lies on the southern skirt of Seoul, bordering Anyang of Gyeonggi Province. No Brain () is a South Korean punk rock band widely considered one of the godfathers of the Korean punk scene. Originally part of Korea's homegrown underground punk movement, known as Chosun Punk, in recent years the group has enjoyed mainstream success both with their music and their emerging acting and hosting careers.
