Kolomna Locomotive Works
The Kolomna Locomotive Works (Kolomensky Zavod) is a major producer of railroad locomotives as well as locomotive and marine diesel engines in Russia. The plant started production in 1869 with a freight steam locomotive, one of the first in Russia. In the Czarist period before the Russian Revolution, Kolomna was one of a very few producers in Russia. During this period 139 types of steam locomotives were designed. The company is now (2015) a part of Transmashholding. Overview The main activities of the company are: design, manufacturing and service of diesel engines (medium-speed diesel engines and diesel generators for diesel locomotives, power plants, heavy trucks, ships), mainline locomotives (passenger and freight), DC passenger electric locomotives. Tunnelling Shield
A tunnelling shield is a protective structure used during the excavation of large, man-made tunnels. When excavating through ground that is soft, liquid, or otherwise unstable, there is a potential health and safety hazard to workers and the project itself from falling materials or a cave-in. A tunnelling shield can be used as a temporary support structure. It is usually in place for the short-term from when the tunnel section is excavated until it can be lined with a permanent support structure. VL19
The VL19 (Cyrillic script: ВЛ19) was the first class of electric locomotives designed in the Soviet Union. Earlier classes had been designed in the United States and Italy. The VL19s were produced from 1932 to 1938 and became the main freight and passenger DC electric locomotives in the Soviet Union. They were built for 1,500 volt DC but some were later converted to dual voltage. The designation VL was in honour of Vladimir Lenin and "19" Indicates a 19-ton axle load. Equipment The locomotives had a Co-Co wheel arrangement and there were six 340 kW traction motors giving a total output of 2,040 kW. The gear ratio was 3.74:1 and the wheels were 48 inch diameter. Russian Locomotive Class E El
Class E el (Cyrillic script: Ээл) was a Soviet diesel-electric locomotive class built between 1931 and 1941. There were three sub-classes but all were very similar. E el-5 was a prototype built in Germany in 1931. E el-9 was a prototype built in the Russian SFSR in 1932. E el-12 was also built in the RSFSR and went into series production. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents the wheel arrangement of no leading wheels, six powered and coupled driving wheels on three axles and no trailing wheels. This was the most common wheel arrangement used on both tender and tank locomotives in versions with both inside and outside cylinders. Valerian Vladimirovich Kuybyshev (russian: Валериа́н Влади́мирович Ку́йбышев; – 25 January 1935) was a Russian revolutionary, Red Army officer, and prominent Soviet politician.
