Oberburg, Kobern
The Oberburg at Kobern, also called the ''Oberburg'' or ''Altenburg'', is a hill castle above the municipality of Kobern-Gondorf in the county of Mayen-Koblenz in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Location The ruins of the Oberburg ("Upper Castle") stand at a height of about 200 metres above the village of Kobern on a hill ridge that points towards the Moselle. On the same ridge and about 50 metres lower, is the Niederburg, Kobern, Niederburg ("Lower Castle"). Description Apart from the Late Romanesque (architecture), Romanesque St. Matthias' Chapel, Kobern-Gondorf, St. Matthias' Chapel and the ''bergfried'' little other than a few remains of the enceinte have survived. The castle has a rectangular ground plan and measures about 110 by 40 metres. The ground and upper storey of the roughly 9 by 9 metre, square ''bergfried'' are vaulted. Niederburg, Kobern
The Niederburg ("Lower Castle") at Kobern, also called the ''Niedernburg'', ''Unterburg'' or ''Neue Burg'', is a hill castle above the municipality of Kobern-Gondorf in the county of Mayen-Koblenz in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Location The ruins of the Niederburg stand at a height of about 150 metres above the village of Kobern on a hill ridge that points towards the Moselle. On the same ridge and about 50 metres higher, is the Oberburg ("Upper Castle") and St. Matthias' Chapel. Description The castle has an amygdaloidal ground plan. It has a three-storey, 20-metre-high ''bergfried'', measuring 7.5 x 8 metres, with an elevated entrance at a height of 10 metres. There are also the remains of a two-storey, Late Gothic ''palas''. A wall tower and a cistern are also well preserved and there are significant portions of the outer walls. Mayen-Koblenz
Mayen-Koblenz is a district (''Kreis'') in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise) Ahrweiler, Neuwied, Westerwaldkreis, district-free Koblenz, Rhein-Lahn, Rhein-Hunsrück, Cochem-Zell, and Vulkaneifel. History The district was created in 1973 when the two districts, Mayen and Koblenz, were merged. The district has been 'twinned' with the Borough of Waverley in Surrey in southern England since 1982. Geography The two main rivers of the district are the Rhine and the Moselle, which join at the ''Deutsches Eck'' in Koblenz. In the west of the district are the Eifel mountains. A Verbandsgemeinde (; plural Verbandsgemeinden) is a low-level administrative unit in the German federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate and Saxony-Anhalt. A Verbandsgemeinde is typically composed of a small group of villages or towns.
