Kla Party
The Kla Party is a political party in Thailand led by Korn Chatikavanij, a former member of the Democrat Party (Thailand), Democrat Party. In 2022, the party participated in the Bangkok metropolitan council election but failed to secure any seats, receiving 53,232 votes (2.32% of the total). On September 26, 2022, Korn Chatikavanij announced that the Kla Party had formed a political alliance with the Chart Pattana Kla Party to compete in the upcoming 2023 Thai general election, Thai general election in 2023. The Chart Pattana Kla Party currently has four members of parliament, while the Kla Party has none. The Chart Pattana Kla Party only received 0.70% of the votes in 2019, indicating a decline in support since 2011. Korn Chatikavanij's popularity as a prime ministerial candidate is around 2.12% in recent polls, reaching a maximum of 3.78%. Korn Chatikavanij ( th, กรณ์ จาติกวณิช, , born 19 February 1964 in London) is a Thai Democrat Party (Thailand), Democrat Party politician, best selling author, and former investment banker. From 2008 to 2011, he was Ministry of Finance (Thailand), finance minister under Abhisit Vejjajiva. Democrat Party (Thailand)
The Democrat Party ( th, พรรคประชาธิปัตย์; ) is a Thai political party. The oldest party in Thailand, it was founded as a royalist party, and now upholds a conservative and pro-market position. The Democrat Party made its best showings in parliament in 1948, 1976, and 1996. It has never won an outright parliamentary majority. The party's electoral support bases are southern Thailand and Bangkok, although election results in Bangkok have fluctuated widely. The Chart Pattana Kla Party ( th, พรรคชาติพัฒนากล้า) is a Thai political party. In 2007 Thai general election, the chairman of the party is Wannarat Channukul. His brother-in-law, the party's "chief advisor" Suwat Liptapanlop is however considered its ''de facto'' leader. History It was founded under the name of ''Ruam Jai Thai Chart Pattana'' ("Thais United National Development Party") as a merger of Thais United and the former National Development Party in September 2007. 2023 Thai General Election
General elections are scheduled to be held in Thailand on 7 May 2023, after the 25th House of Representatives reaches its four-year term limit. Background Following a political crisis in Thailand, the military staged a coup d'état in 2014, ousting the civilian caretaker government. The military junta, known as the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), rose to power under the leadership of Prayut Chan-o-cha as Prime Minister. In 2016, the NCPO completed the drafting of a new constitution and held a referendum to approve it. They banned criticism of the draft constitution and prohibited monitoring of the referendum. Activists against the document were arrested, detained, and prosecuted in military courts, whilst voters who expressed their intention to vote against the draft were also arrested and prosecuted by the military regime. Political Parties In Thailand
Until 22 May 2014, the politics of Thailand were conducted within the framework of a constitutional monarchy, whereby the prime minister is the head of government and a hereditary monarch is head of state. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislative branches. Following the coup d'état of 22 May 2014 revoking the 2007 constitution, a military organization called National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) had taken over administration. The chief of NCPO abolished the national assembly and assumed the responsibilities of the legislative branch. Under the martial law enforced throughout the kingdom, military courts have been tasked to be responsible for some cases that are normally under the civilian courts. However, the court system, including the Constitutional Court, still remains in existence, even without the constitution.
