Kjer Glacier
Kjer Glacier is a tidewater glacier in the northwestern shore of Greenland. Administratively it belongs to Avannaata municipality. Geography It drains the Greenland ice sheet ( kl, Sermersuaq) southwestwards into Melville Bay''Upernavik Avannarleq'', Saga Map, Tage Schjøtt, 1992 south of the Steenstrup Glacier and north of the Hayes Glacier. The glacier front is located to the northwest of the Tuttulikassak nunatak, with the glacier constituting the northern end of Upernavik Archipelago. Administrative border Before the administrative changes on 1 January 2009 in the country, the border between the former Upernavik Municipality and the former Qaanaaq Municipality ran through Kjer Glacier. After that date both municipalities and the entire coast of Melville Bay were made part of Qaasuitsup municipality. Since 1 January 2018 it is part of Avannaata municipality. Melville Bay
Melville Bay ( kl, Qimusseriarsuaq; da, Melville Bugt), is a large bay off the coast of northwestern Greenland. Located to the north of the Upernavik Archipelago, it opens to the south-west into Baffin Bay. Its Kalaallisut name, ''Qimusseriarsuaq'', means "the great dog sledding place". The bay was named after Robert Dundas, 2nd Viscount Melville, (1771 - 1851) head of the Admiralty. Upernavik Archipelago is a vast coastal archipelago in the Avannaata municipality in northwestern Greenland, off the shores of northeastern Baffin Bay. A glacier (; ) is a persistent body of dense ice that is constantly moving under its own weight. A glacier forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation over many years, often centuries. Qaanaaq Municipality
Qaanaaq Municipality was the only municipality in the county of North Greenland (Avannaa). It is now part of the municipality of Avannaata. On January 22, 1968, a B-52 crashed 11 km (7 mi) south of Thule Air Base. Nuclear bombs were lost and debris scattered over the area in the accident. The municipality has a population of 850 (as of 1 January 2005). The town of Qaanaaq has a population of 640. Upernavik Municipality
Upernavik Municipality was one of the municipalities of Greenland, until 31 December 2008, when it and seven other municipalities were consolidated to form the state of Qaasuitsup. The municipality was home to approximately 3,000 people, while 1,144 live in the town of Upernavik, and the remainder live in ten other settlements, including Kullorsuaq, with a population of about 400. Nunatak
A nunatak (from Inuit ''nunataq'') is the summit or ridge of a mountain that protrudes from an ice field or glacier that otherwise covers most of the mountain or ridge.
