Kitchener Public Library
The Kitchener Public Library is the public library system for the city of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. It consists of five libraries; a large Central Library in the downtown core, with four Community Libraries spread out to provide services for the neighbourhoods of Kitchener. History The main branch of the Kitchener Public Library opened at 85 Queen Street in May 1962. Its origins date back to the Mechanics Institute first established in 1854, that grew within the first year to nearly 1,000 books in German and English. The collection, maintained by membership fees and private subscriptions, was destroyed by fire in the 1860s and was replaced in 1871 by a library located on the first floor of the town hall. The Berlin Public Library was officially formed in 1884 following the passing of the Free Libraries Act two years prior. Ask Ontario (askON) is a realtime chat and SMS-based research information service that connects students of Ontario, Canada to staff at college libraries across the province, for instant-messaging and SMS-based reference help online. askON's mandate is to help visitors find better information than they can on their own, and to raise the profile of Ontario's libraries as providers of services and tools, responsive to the needs of an increasingly digitally literate society. Forest Heights Collegiate Institute
Forest Heights Collegiate Institute (FHCI), shortened as Forest Heights or simply Forest, is a high school in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada that was established in 1964. It is run by the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB). As of the 2019–2020 school year, Forest Heights has 1,110 students. FHCI serves the youth of the Northwest Kitchener, ON by “receiving its students from A.R. Kaufman Public School, Laurentian Senior Public School, MacGregor Senior Public School, Queensmount Public School and Westheights Public School.” The school draws many of its students from the Forest Heights neighbourhood for which it was named, as well as the adjacent neighbourhood of Forest Hill. Grand River Collegiate Institute is a public secondary school in Kitchener, Ontario. The school is located at 175 Indian Road. It is part of the Waterloo Region District School Board. As of November 2017, there are approximately 1250 full-time students and 130 staff. History As the fifth collegiate in Kitchener-Waterloo, Grand River Collegiate (GRCI) was built on Indian Road near the Grand River in Kitchener's eastern area. Mabel Dunham
Bertha Mabel "Mabel" Dunham (1881–1957) was a Canadian librarian and author. She was the first trained librarian in the province of Ontario to hold the position of chief librarian and wrote several historical fiction books for both children and adults. Dunham worked at the Kitchener Public Library for 36 years, in addition to teaching library science courses and playing an active role within local history and professional communities. Early life and education She was born near Harriston, Ontario, on May 29, 1881. Dunham's mother, Magdalena Eby, was a descendant of one of the earliest Mennonite families to settle in what is now the Region of Waterloo and her father, Martin Dunham, was a descent of Scottish Loyalists.
