Kirkland Laing
Kirkland Laing (20 June 1954 – 9 June 2021) was a Jamaican-born, British welterweight boxer nicknamed ''The Gifted One''. Laing fought 56 times in a twenty-year career, the highlight of which was a shock split decision win over Roberto Durán in September 1982. The fight was selected as Ring Magazine's ''upset of the year''. He was a twice winner of the British welterweight title and won the EBU welterweight title in 1990, with a second round knockout of Antoine Fernandez at the Wembley Conference Centre. Early life Laing was born in Jamaica in 1954. Shortly before his birth, his mother Louise fell off a bicycle. As a result Laing had some developmental difficulties resulting in difficulty walking before the age of five. He also attributes his unconventional boxing stance to this early trauma. Welterweight
Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like Muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight. Etymology The first known instance of the term is from 1831, meaning "heavyweight horseman," later "boxer or wrestler of a certain weight" by 1896. Glenn Catley
Glenn Catley (born 15 March 1972) is a British retired professional boxer and former WBC super-middleweight World Champion. Biography Catley was born in Frampton Cotterell, south Gloucestershire, England. Known as "Catman", he turned pro in 1993 as a Middleweight and Won 21 of his first 22 fights (including a victory over Kirkland Laing), and won the WBC International Middleweight Title against George Bocco. However, he then surprisingly lost this title to Hungarian Andras Galfi by TKO. Catley came back from this unexpected setback and won the British Middleweight Title with a KO over world rated Neville Brown. He then moved up to Super Middleweight and challenged WBC World Super Middleweight Title holder Richie Woodhall in 1998, but lost a majority decision in an all British battle. ''KO Magazine'' was a popular United States boxing magazine. It was first published in 1980, to compete with '' The Ring''. It was founded by Stanley Weston, long-time publisher of numerous boxing and pro wrestling titles. ''KO Magazine'', nicknamed "The Knockout Boxing Magazine", ran some popular features, such as a round-by-round section where the most important fights were described punch by punch, posters with the boxer's complete records on the back, and a question and answer interview section. Weston wanted ''KO'' to stand out above all other boxing magazines on the market, including the ones he published. It was meant to be a rival to ''The Ring'' and outsold that magazine for years. Peter King was editor from KO's founding until his departure from the company in 1987. Patrizio Oliva
Patrizio Oliva (born 28 January 1959) is an Italian former professional boxer, who won the gold medal in the light welterweight division at the 1980 Moscow Olympics as an amateur and the WBA light welterweight title as a professional. Early life Patrizio is one of seven brothers born to Rocco and Catena Oliva. Oliva was introduced to boxing through his father Rocco and his brother Mario's passion for the sport. One of his brothers, Ciro, died and Oliva dedicated a number of his fights to the memory of Ciro and also named his first son after him. Amateur career Oliva had a successful amateur career and won 93 of his 96 fights winning the Italian, European and Olympic titles. Del Bryan
Delroy "Del" Bryan (born 16 April 1967) is a British former boxer who twice won the British welterweight title and fought for the European title at the same weight. Career Born in Nottingham, Bryan's professional career began in 1986. His early results were mixed and included a defeat to George Collins and a win over Daren Dyer in 1987. In October 1987 he won his first title by beating Gary Sommervile to take the Midlands Area welterweight title. He won six of his next eight fights, which included wins over Lloyd Christie and Javier Castillejo, and a defeat to Gary Jacobs, before successfully defending his area title against Michael Justin. In April 1990 he beat Damian Denny in a British title eliminator, setting up a challenge to Kirkland Laing's welterweight title. Lloyd Honeyghan
Lloyd Honeyghan (born 22 April 1960) is a British former professional boxer who competed from 1980 to 1995. He reigned as the undisputed welterweight champion from 1986 to 1987, and held the WBC, '' The Ring'' magazine welterweight titles twice between 1986 and 1989. At regional level he held the British, European and Commonwealth welterweight titles between 1983 and 1985, and the Commonwealth super-welterweight title from 1993 to 1994. Colin Jones (boxer)
Colin Raymond Jones (born 21 March 1959 in Gorseinon, Swansea) is a Welsh former boxer, who became British, Commonwealth and European welterweight champion. Before turning professional he represented Great Britain at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Colin had a trainer by the name of Gareth Bevan, also helped out by his son John Bevan. Boxing career In 1976 Jones was the youngest British boxer to qualify for the Olympic Games until Amir Khan appeared at the 2004 Summer Olympics. The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) is the governing body of professional boxing in the United Kingdom. History The British Boxing Board of Control was formed in 1929 from the old National Sporting Club and is headquartered in Cardiff. Until 1948, it had a colour bar in effect by means of its Rule 24, which stated that title contestants "must have two white parents". The British Boxing Board of Control initially refused to grant Jane Couch a professional licence on the sole ground that she was a woman, and argued that PMS made women too unstable to box. Henry Rhiney (born 28 November 1951) is a British former boxer who was British welterweight champion between 1976 and 1979, and European champion between 1978 and 1979. Career A car worker of Jamaican origin, Henry Rhiney made his professional debut in April 1973. He won most of his early fights but was beaten twice in 1974 by Pat Thomas. In February 1975 he lost to French champion Germain Le Maitre. He won his first professional title in October 1976, stopping Mickey Ryce in the eighth round to become BBBofC Southern Area welterweight champion. Two months later he fought Thomas again for the latter's British title, avenging the earlier defeats with an eighth round stoppage to become British champion.
