Kingston Yacht Club
Kingston Yacht Club (KYC) is a private yacht club based in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The stated objectives of the club are to encourage the building and sailing of yachts, skiffs and canoes; motor boating; rowing; canoeing and all aquatic and other sports among amateurs. History KYC was founded in 1896 from its first incarnation, the ''Kingston Ice Yacht Club'', which was formed in 1895. Its first clubhouse building, a 40x40-foot two-story structure, was opened on August 3, 1896. In 1906–7, Henry Patrick Smith designed a Kingston Yacht Club clubhouse at the foot of Maitland Street. The clubhouse was destroyed by fire in 1934. The current clubhouse was erected in 1935 and officially opened by the Governor General of Canada, the Earl of Bessborough. Kingston, Ontario
Kingston is a city in Ontario, Canada. It is located on the north-eastern end of Lake Ontario, at the beginning of the St. Lawrence River and at the mouth of the Cataraqui River (south end of the Rideau Canal). The city is midway between Toronto, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec. Kingston is also located nearby the Thousand Islands, a tourist region to the east, and the Prince Edward County tourist region to the west. Britannia Yacht Club
The Britannia Yacht Club (BYC) is a private social club, yacht club and tennis club based in Britannia, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1887 by a group of cottagers. BYC is located on an extension of land at the eastern end of Lac Deschênes near the Deschênes Rapids on the Ottawa River. A land block owned by the National Capital Commission on the south side of the harbour is leased to the BYC. The area immediately south of the property is occupied by residences of Britannia Bay. The harbor was built from an abandoned power canal, which lay beside the club property. This harbor has been expanded twice since its original development. The harbor water level is controlled by a system of stop logs at its entrance. A yacht club is a sports club specifically related to yachting. Description Yacht clubs are mostly located by the sea, although there some that have been established at a lake or riverside locations. Yacht or sailing clubs have either a marina or a delimited section of the beach or shoreline with buoys marking the areas off-limits for swimmers as well as safe offshore anchorages. On shore they also include a perimeter reserved for the exclusive use of the members of the club as well as a clubhouse with attached Bar (counter), bar, café or restaurant where members socialize in a pleasant and informal setting. Vere Ponsonby, 9th Earl Of Bessborough
Vere Brabazon Ponsonby, 9th Earl of Bessborough, (27 October 1880 – 10 March 1956), was an Anglo-Irish businessman and politician who served as Governor General of Canada, the fourteenth since Canadian Confederation. Born and educated in England into ' the Ascendancy', the Anglo-Irish aristocracy, he graduated with a law degree from Cambridge University. In 1910 he became a member of the London County Council as a member of the British House of Commons. Upon the death of his grandfather ten years later, Ponsonby succeeded as Earl of Bessborough and took his seat in the House of Lords. In 1931 he was appointed as Governor-General by King George V, on the recommendation of British prime minister Ramsay MacDonald, to replace The Earl of Willingdon as viceroy. He occupied the post until succeeded by The Lord Tweedsmuir in 1935.
