Bellydance (band)
Bellydance were an Australian 9 piece dance, funk band originally known as Bellydance Disco, which formed in Sydney 1987. Mainstays were Tony Hughes on vocals, Frank Ward on bass, Ted Cavanagh on guitar and Scott Saunders (also in Directions in Groove) on keyboards. Featured a range of musicians/vocalists and brass. Their debut album, ''One Blood'' (1993), was nominated at the ARIA Music Awards of 1994 for Best Pop Release. History Bellydance were formed as a dance, funk band, Bellydance Disco, in Sydney in 1987 by mainstays Ted Cavanagh on guitar, the actor, Tony Hughes on vocals, and Scott Saunders (ex-Deckchairs Overboard, Beatfish) on keyboards. Their line-up changed often and the ensemble sometimes reached 12 members. The group's debut single, "Spittin' Bullets", appeared in July 1987. Tony Hughes (actor)
Tony Hughes is an American actor and singer. As an actor, he starred in ''The Lost Islands'' (1976), ''Chopper Squad'' (1977–1979) and the film adaptation of ''Puberty Blues'' (1981). As a singer he has fronted Bellydance and King Tide. Hughes was born in England and moved to Australia at age 12. He moved into acting in the 1970s, first appearing in an episode of ''The Rovers''. He then appeared in the entire ''The Lost Islands'' and ''Chopper Squad'' series. He made his first feature film appearance in a small part in ''My Brilliant Career''. He was then a major cast member of ''Puberty Blues''. After a few more small parts he moved into music, playing with Bellydance until they disbanded and then forming King Tide. Terepai Richmond
Terepai Chalmers Richmond (born 21 February 1971) is an Australian drummer. He joined the Sydney-based rock band The Whitlams in September 1999 and formerly played in acid jazz group Directions in Groove (d.i.g.) (1991–1998, 2008). Biography Terepai Chalmers Richmond was born on 21 February 1971 to a Scottish father and a Cook Island mother who ran a restaurant in Sydney. He started drumming in his parents' Polynesian show band at the age of six, with his sister Jennifer dancing, where he performed several shows every week until finishing school at eighteen. After finishing school, he joined Sydney soul/funk outfit Bellydance and another well established funk band Swoop (their song "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" contains the line "Time to boogie to the rhythm of Terepai"). He was the founding drummer and percussionist of acid jazz group, Directions in Groove (dig) formed in Sydney in 1991.
