King George High School
King George High School is a high school in King George County, Virginia, United States. It has been the only high school in the county since 1968, when the county's schools were integrated and Ralph Bunche High School was closed. In 2006 ground was broken on a new high school building that opened in February 2008. It is the school district for areas adjacent to Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. Athletics The Men's Basketball team won the 1969-1970 state championship, the only team state championship for the school. From the late 1990s until the early 2000s King George won 7 consecutive championships under the leadership of the legendary coach Jim Moyer. King George High School has won six consecutive Men's district championships and 4 consecutive Women's district titles with the Men's team placing 3rd in the state of Virginia A/AA swimming and diving championships in 2005. King George is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of King George County, Virginia, United States. It is sometimes referred to as King George Courthouse, because it is the location of the King George County Courthouse. The population as of the 2020 census was 4,970. Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division
The United States Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD), named for Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren, is located in King George County, Virginia, in close proximity to the largest fleet concentration area in the Navy. NSWCDD is part of the Naval Surface Warfare Centers under the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). NSWCDD was initially established 16 October 1918 as a remote extension of Maryland's Indian Head Proving Ground used for testing naval guns. The Dahlgren site was named the Lower Station, Dahlgren Naval Proving Ground when it first opened. Ralph Bunche High School
Ralph Bunche High School was a school constructed in 1949 as a result of Civil Action 631 to provide "separate but equal" education for African-American students in King George County, Virginia. The school operated until 1968 when King George High School was completed and the county's schools integrated. The school was named for Ralph Bunche, an African-American educator, diplomat and Nobel Prize winner. Architecture The building continued to be used for various school uses until 1998, including at times as an elementary school, for several specialized programs, including secondary and pre-school, and for School Board administrative offices and some School Board meetings.
