King Gambrinus (sculpture)
''King Gambrinus'' is a public artwork by American artist Carl Kuehns, which depicts Gambrinus, and which is located in the courtyard of the Best Place tavern and hall at the former site of the Pabst Brewing Company Former Corporate Office Building, that is near downtown Milwaukee, WI, United States. Description The statue features a standing, bearded King Gambrius in blue clothing with a red and white cape holding a flagon of beer in his right hand. The figure wears black boots, a studded belt, and a crown. He directs his gaze toward the uplifted glass of beer and rests his other hand on his thick waist. Behind his feet rests a wooden beer barrel. The painted metal sculpture weighs 900 lbs. Gambrinus
Gambrinus ( ) is a legendary European culture hero celebrated as an icon of beer, brewing, joviality, and ''joie de vivre''. Typical representations in the visual arts depict him as a rotund, bearded duke or king, holding a tankard or mug, and sometimes with a keg nearby. Though sometimes erroneously called a patron saint, Gambrinus is neither a saint nor a tutelary deity. It is possible his persona was conflated with traditional medieval saints associated with beermaking, like Saint Arnold of Soissons. In one legendary tradition, he is beer's inventor or envoy. Although legend attributes to him no special powers to bless brews or to make crops grow, tellers of old tall tales are happy to adapt them to fit Gambrinus. Gambrinus stories use folklore motifs common to European folktales, such as the trial by ordeal. Some imagine Gambrinus as a man who has an enormous capacity for drinking beer. Pabst Brewing Company Former Corporate Office Building
The Pabst Brewing Company former Corporate Office Building & Guest Center is located at 901 W. Juneau Ave. in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the Pabst Brewery Complex. Early History It was originally a public elementary school built in 1858 across the street from the Best Brewing Company. The Best Brewing Company was purchased by Captain Frederick Pabst and renamed the Pabst Brewing Company. The school and grounds were purchased by Captain Frederick Pabst in 1890 for the playground. Captain Frederick Pabst wanted to build a bottling house on the playground area, and decided to use the school for the corporate offices. He had alterations made to the building, including improving the school’s original tower and turning the cornice on the roof into battlements. The Visitor’s Center and Gift Shop were added to the structure in 1934 after Prohibition ended. The Miller Brewing Company is an American brewery and beer company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was founded in 1855 by Frederick Miller. Pabst Brewery Complex
The Pabst Brewery Complex, on a hill northwest of the downtown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is the former brewery of the Pabst Brewing Company, where the company innovated to improve their beer and increase production until in 1892 it was the largest brewer of lager in the world. In 2003 the complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1844 Jacob Best Sr., an immigrant from Mettenheim, Germany, founded the Best and Company Brewery with his four sons - the germ of the Pabst complex. Along with lager beer, Best brewed ale, porter and whiskey. When old Jacob retired in 1853, his brewery produced 2,500 barrels per year - the fourth largest brewery in Milwaukee. Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants.
