Khatanga Airport
Khatanga Airport is an airport in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia located southeast of Khatanga (village), Khatanga. It is a major airfield servicing medium-sized airliners. Interceptor aircraft were based here in the 1970s, and the airfield may have been home to deployments from Bratsk. Today it serves as a hub for North Pole tourist expeditions via Sredny Ostrov; however, the Arctic regions still remain sensitive military zones and Khatanga is the first stop requiring entry permission from Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation, Federal Security Service border guards. One of its uses is as a diversion airport if a twin-engine airliner experiences engine problems while flying over Siberia; however, the airport is only equipped for landings during good weather. Khatanga (village)
Khatanga (russian: Хатанга) is a rural locality (a '' selo'') in Taymyrsky Dolgano-Nenetsky District of Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, located on the Khatanga River on the Taymyr Peninsula. It is one of the northernmost inhabited localities in Russia. Its elevation is above sea level. As of the 2002 Census, its population was 3,450. The name Khatanga means "large water" in the local Evenki language. The locality is known to have existed since the 17th century. It is served by the Khatanga Airport. Khatanga is relatively close to the Popigai impact structure, an asteroid impact structure and geological formation located in northern Siberia. Sredny Ostrov
Sredny Ostrov is a small island ('ostrov') and a military airfield in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, located in the northern Kara Sea, off the archipelago of Severnaya Zemlya and almost 900 km north of Khatanga which in turn is on the Siberian coast. Sredny is an ice airfield used as an alternate field for Tu-95 (Bear) bombers in the Arctic. It was built in the late 1950s as a staging base for Soviet bombers to reach the United States, and was maintained by OGA (Arctic Control Group), which was a caretaker agency for strategic facilities in the Arctic. In March 1979 2 Tu-128 (Fiddler) aircraft were based here.
