Kevy (cartoonist)
Kerala Varma ( – 23 July 2010), popularly known as Kevy, was an Indian political cartoonist. Kevy began his career by publishing cartoons in ''Shankar's Weekly''. He later became a staff cartoonist at ''Eastern Economist''. During the Emergency, Kevy was jailed ostensibly for drawing caricatures critical of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Kevy drew his last cartoons for ''The New Indian Express'' in 2008 and 2009. Kevy believed in the distinction of cartoons from art, and chose to regard a cartoon as a message – the merit of which only depends on how effectively the message is conveyed. His style changed considerably over the course of his career. Political Cartoonist
An editorial cartoonist, also known as a political cartoonist, is an artist who draws editorial cartoons that contain some level of political or social commentary. Their cartoons are used to convey and question an aspect of daily news or current affairs in a national or international context. Political cartoonists generally adopt a caricaturist style of drawing, to capture the likeness of a politician or subject. They may also employ humor or satire to ridicule an individual or group, emphasize their point of view or comment on a particular event. Media trends The traditional and most common outlet for political cartoonists is the pocket cartoon, which usually appears in the editorial page or the front news page of a newspaper, in the front news section of a newspaper. Shankar's Weekly
''Shankar's Weekly'' was an Indian satirical magazine published between 1948 and 1975. It was founded and run by Keshav Shankar Pillai, a pioneering political cartoonist. The magazine has been compared to the UK's ''Punch''. The weekly printed its first issue in 1948 after Pillai left the ''Hindustan Times'' following pressure from ''Times'' editor Devdas Gandhi to stop publishing cartoons critical of C. Rajagopalachari, a prominent Congress leader. The magazine was launched by Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, with whom Pillai shared a close friendship, even though Pillai described the magazine as "fundamentally anti-establishment". The Emergency (India)
The Emergency in India was a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977 when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had a state of emergency declared across the country. Officially issued by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352 of the Constitution because of prevailing "internal disturbance", the Emergency was in effect from 25 June 1975 to its withdrawal on 21 March 1977. The order bestowed upon the Prime Minister the authority to rule by decree, allowing elections to be cancelled and civil liberties to be suspended. For much of the Emergency, most of Gandhi's political opponents were imprisoned and the press was censored. Several other human rights violations were reported from the time, including a mass campaign for vasectomy spearheaded by her son Sanjay Gandhi. Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi (; Given name, ''née'' Nehru; 19 November 1917 – 31 October 1984) was an Indian politician and a central figure of the Indian National Congress. ''The New Indian Express'' is an Indian English-language broadsheet daily newspaper published by the Chennai-based Express Publications. It was founded in 1932 as ''The Indian Express'', under the ownership of Chennai-based P. Varadarajulu Naidu.
