Kevin Hooper (politician)
Kevin Joseph (Kev) Hooper, (9 July 19289 March 1984), was an Australian politician representing the Labor Party. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for the Electoral district of Archerfield from 1972 till his death in 1984. Nicknamed "Big Vinnie" after a notorious Mafia informant, he was known for championing the cause of the underdog; he was outspoken in his attacks on illegal prostitution, drugs, gambling, and white-collar crime. Hooper died after surgery in 1984. Archerfield was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1972 to 2001. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). Underdog (term)
An underdog is a person or group in a competition, usually in sports and creative works, who is largely expected to lose. The party, team, or individual expected to win is called the favorite or top dog. In the case where an underdog wins, the outcome is an upset. An "underdog bet" is a bet on the underdog or outsider for which the odds are generally higher. The first recorded uses of the term occurred in the second half of the 19th century; its first meaning was "the beaten dog in a fight". In British and American culture, underdogs are highly regarded. This harkens to core Judeo-Christian stories, such as that of David and Goliath, and also ancient British legends such as Robin Hood and King Arthur, and reflects the ideal behind the American dream, where someone who is poor and/or weak can use hard work to achieve victory. The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. 1984 Archerfield State By-election
A by-election was held in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland seat of Archerfield on 19 May 1984. It was triggered by the death of sitting Labor member Kevin Hooper on 9 March 1984. The seat was retained by the Labor Party with the election of candidate Henry Palaszczuk. The only surprise in the result was the relatively strong showing of the Liberal Party compared to the National Party. Both the Labor and National parties had problems during the campaign, the former with factional feuding over candidate selection, and the Nationals with a candidate who seemed unsure whether his loyalties were to his own party or to Labor. The Federated Miscellaneous Workers' Union (F.M.W.U.), commonly known as the 'Missos', was an Australian trade union which existed between 1915 and 1992. It represented an extremely diverse and disparate range of occupations, but its core support came from workers employed in cleaning and security services. Henry Palaszczuk
Heinrich Palaszczuk (, Polish: ; born 12 January 1947) is a former Labor member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, and minister of the Beattie Government of Queensland. He was elected as the member for Archerfield in 1984, and held that seat until his election as the member for Inala in 1992. Palaszczuk retired from politics in 2006, and was succeeded in his seat of Inala by his daughter Annastacia Palaszczuk, who has been the Premier of Queensland since 2015.
