1984 Archerfield State By-election
A by-election was held in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland seat of Archerfield on 19 May 1984. It was triggered by the death of sitting Labor member Kevin Hooper on 9 March 1984. The seat was retained by the Labor Party with the election of candidate Henry Palaszczuk. The only surprise in the result was the relatively strong showing of the Liberal Party compared to the National Party. Both the Labor and National parties had problems during the campaign, the former with factional feuding over candidate selection, and the Nationals with a candidate who seemed unsure whether his loyalties were to his own party or to Labor. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Archerfield was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1972 to 2001. Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch)
The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. A Workers' Political Reform Association was founded to nominate candidates for the 1888 election, at which the Brisbane Trades and Labor Council endorsed six candidates. Thomas Glassey won the seat of Bundamba at that election, becoming the first self-identified "labor" MP in Queensland. Kevin Hooper (politician)
Kevin Joseph (Kev) Hooper, (9 July 19289 March 1984), was an Australian politician representing the Labor Party. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for the Electoral district of Archerfield from 1972 till his death in 1984. Nicknamed "Big Vinnie" after a notorious Mafia informant, he was known for championing the cause of the underdog; he was outspoken in his attacks on illegal prostitution, drugs, gambling, and white-collar crime. Hooper died after surgery in 1984. Henry Palaszczuk
Heinrich Palaszczuk (, Polish: ; born 12 January 1947) is a former Labor member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, and minister of the Beattie Government of Queensland. He was elected as the member for Archerfield in 1984, and held that seat until his election as the member for Inala in 1992. Palaszczuk retired from politics in 2006, and was succeeded in his seat of Inala by his daughter Annastacia Palaszczuk, who has been the Premier of Queensland since 2015. Early life and career Palaszczuk was born in Germany to Polish parents. His family moved to Queensland when he was young. Prior to entering politics, he earned a Diploma of Education and became a school teacher.
