Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania
Sinking Spring is a borough in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 4,008 at the 2010 census. Sinking Spring was given its name for a spring located in the center of town. The water in this spring would sink into the ground from time to time, giving the illusion that it had disappeared. The Sinking Spring area is served by the Wilson School District. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all land. The Indians who first inhabited this area were the Lenni Lenape Indians (meaning the "original people"). The tribe in this immediate area was the Minsi or Wolf tribe. The Winston Western 500 was an annual NASCAR Winston Cup race held at Riverside International Raceway in Riverside, California, United States, in January, and then in later years, November. From 1963 to 1981, the race was held in January and was the season opening race. NASCAR elected to start its season with the Daytona 500 beginning in 1982, so a second Winston Western 500 was run in November to accommodate the change; the change resulted in Riverside hosting three Winston Cup races in 1981. The race ran in November from 1981 to 1987, serving as the Winston Cup Series' final race of the year from 1981 to 1986. Walter Harvey Ballard Sr. (born January 12, 1933) is a former NASCAR driver from Houston, Texas. In 1971, he won the Rookie of the Year Award in the NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National Series (known as the NASCAR Cup Series as of 2021), in its first year under Winston's sponsorship. NASCAR Winston Cup Series Ballard made his first start in the Winston Cup Series (then known as the Grand National Series) in 1966, but did not race in the series again until 1971. In 1971, Ballard ran a nearly-full season in a car owned by his father Vic, capturing 11 top-tens, a tenth-place finish in points, and the Rookie of the Year Award. Donlavey Racing
Donlavey Racing was a stock car racing team that competed from 1950 until 2002 in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. It was owned by Junie Donlavey and ran a total of 863 races in NASCAR. Donlavey Racing used a number of makes and numbers, but for years was best known for the No. 90 Ford. Though the team only had one points win (1981 Mason-Dixon 500) and two pole positions in its long history, three of Donlavey's drivers won Rookie of the Year honors ( Bill Dennis in 1970, Jody Ridley in 1980, Ken Schrader in 1985) and a number of former and future NASCAR race winners drove for the team. Dover International Speedway
Dover Motor Speedway (formerly Dover Downs International Speedway and later Dover International Speedway) is a race track in Dover, Delaware. The track has hosted at least one NASCAR Cup Series race each year since 1969, including two per year from 1971 to 2020. In addition to NASCAR, the track also hosted USAC and the Indy Racing League. The NASCAR Cup Series is the top racing series of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). Flemington Speedway
Flemington Speedway was a motor racing circuit in Flemington, New Jersey which operated from 1915 to 2002. The track was once known for being the fastest 5/8 dirt track in the United States. Early history Flemington Speedway was created as a mid-nineteenth century fairgrounds horse track hosting horse racing events during the Hunterdon County 4-H Agricultural Fair starting in 1848. It was a half mile, four-cornered dirt oval. Motorcycles first raced on this horse track in 1911, and the "Speedway" hosted its first automobile race in 1915 as a half mile dirt oval. The first race was promoted and won by Ira Vail. The track's grandstand opened in 1917 and remained standing until the track was demolished in January 2005. Grandview Speedway
Grandview Speedway is a one third-mile automobile race track located just east of Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania, United States. Featuring moderately high banks and a wide racing surface, it is suitable for close racing and passing. The track is sanctioned by NASCAR in the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series. History The track opened in 1963 and was built by Forrest Rogers after construction started in 1962. The track was originally planned as a ¼ mile (402 meters) asphalt track in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Eventually this was changed to a larger dirt track in Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania. New Egypt Speedway
New Egypt Speedway is a 7/16 mile clay race track in New Egypt, New Jersey. The track hosted the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour on a quarter mile asphalt track in the 1980s. History The track was built in 1946 as a 1/4 mile dirt track, before being converted to a paved race track during the 1960s, through the early 1990s when the track was abandoned. The speedway was about to be torn down until the Grosso family purchased it in 1997. Until this point the speedway had steadily deteriorated from bad to worse. Originally pavement, the new NES brought dirt track racing back to Ocean County, New Jersey.
