Kelso Branch
The Kelso Branch was a twin track branch railway in Northumberland, England and Roxburghshire, Scotland that ran from on the East Coast Main Line via seven intermediate stations to . History Plans for a horse drawn railway between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Kelso were put forward as early as 1809. An Act of Parliament was passed in 1811 allowing the enterprise to proceed, but it was formally abandoned in 1827 after failing to secure sufficient investment. There was a brief flurry of interest in reviving the scheme in 1836, when estimates showed that the two towns could be linked by rail for the relatively modest sum of £100,000. Nevertheless, attempts to raise the necessary funds were once more unsuccessful. In 1844, two rival proposals for a main line between Newcastle upon Tyne and Berwick were submitted to Parliament, both of which included the building of a branch to Kelso. The York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway (YN&BR) was an English railway company formed in 1847 by the amalgamation of the York and Newcastle Railway and the Newcastle and Berwick Railway. Both companies were part of the group of business interests controlled by George Hudson, the so-called ''Railway King''. In collaboration with the York and North Midland Railway and other lines he controlled, he planned that the YN&BR would form the major part of a continuous railway between London and Edinburgh. At this stage the London terminal was Euston Square (nowadays called Euston) and the route was through Normanton. The North Eastern Railway (NER) was an English railway company. It was incorporated in 1854 by the combination of several existing railway companies. Later, it was amalgamated with other railways to form the London and North Eastern Railway at the Grouping in 1923. Its main line survives to the present day as part of the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh. Unlike many other pre-Grouping companies the NER had a relatively compact territory, in which it had a near monopoly. The Kelso And Jedburgh Railway Branch Lines
The Railway of Kelso and Jedburgh branch lines was a 'network' of three distinct railway services serving Kelso in the Scottish Borders. The first of these was a branch of the Newcastle and Berwick Railway, departing from a junction at Tweedmouth, near Berwick-upon-Tweed, and initially terminating at Sprouston, two miles west of Kelso. This was opened in 1849. The second line, opened in 1850, was a branch of the North British Railway which departed from the line for Hawick at St Boswells and initially terminated at a second temporary station just outside Kelso. After another year, in 1851, the gap between the two Kelso stations was closed and a permanent station at Kelso opened. Alnwick Branch Line
The Alnwick branch line is a partly closed railway line in Northumberland, northern England. A heritage railway currently operates a mile of the line, which originally ran from Alnmouth railway station, on the East Coast Main Line, to the town of Alnwick, a distance of . It opened on 5 August 1850 to both freight and passenger traffic. Passenger operations included direct Newcastle to Alnwick services, as well as regular shuttle runs between Alnmouth and Alnwick. As late as 1966, some of the Alnmouth to Alnwick shuttles were still operated by steam locomotives. George Hudson
George Hudson (probably 10 March 1800 – 14 December 1871) was an English railway financier and politician who, because he controlled a significant part of the railway network in the 1840s, became known as "The Railway King"—a title conferred on him by Sydney Smith in 1844. Hudson played a significant role in linking London to Edinburgh by rail, carrying out the first major merging of railway companies (the Midland Railway) and developing his home city of York into a major railway junction. He also represented Sunderland in the House of Commons. Hudson's success was built on dubious financial practices and he frequently paid shareholders out of capital rather than money the company had earned.
