Kawatana, Nagasaki
is a town located in Higashisonogi District, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. As of October 1, 2021, the town has an estimated population of 13,221 and a density of 355 persons per km2. The total area is 37.25 km2. During World War II, manufacturing facilities associated with the Sasebo Naval Arsenal were constructed in Kawatana, leading to a temporary increase in population. The economy of the area is now heavily dependent on agriculture and fishing. Sasebo Naval Arsenal
was one of four principal naval shipyards owned and operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy. History The Sasebo Naval District was established at Sasebo, Nagasaki in 1886, as the third of the naval districts responsible for the defense of the Japanese home islands. After the establishment of the navy base, a ship repair facility was established in 1889 with a dry dock. With the addition of equipment and facilities for ship production by 1897, the "Sasebo Shipyards" were officially established, and renamed the "Sasebo Naval Arsenal" in 1903. Construction of the arsenal was supervised by the French engineer Louis-Émile Bertin. In 1913, a 250-ton crane was installed, and the shipbuilding facilities expanded to permit the construction of large warships. Kawatana Station
is the major railway station in the town of Kawatana, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. It is operated by JR Kyushu and is on the Ōmura Line. Lines The station is served by the Ōmura Line and is located 13.6 km from the starting point of the line at . Besides the local services on the line, the Rapid ''Seaside Liner'' also stops at the station. Station layout The station consists of two platforms serving two tracks. The platforms and tracks are not opposed. Platform/track 2 is actually on the far side of what was once an island platform with the centre line removed. A siding runs beside track 2. Ōmura Line
is a railway line in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, operated by the Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu). It connects Haiki Station in Sasebo to Isahaya Station in Isahaya. From 1898 the line was part of the Nagasaki Main Line until the Hizen Yamaguchi - Isahaya line opened in 1934.
