Cinema Of Karnataka
Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood, or Chandanavana, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Kannada language widely spoken in the state of Karnataka. The 1934 film ''Sati Sulochana'' directed by Y. V. Rao was the first talkie film in the Kannada language. It was also the first film starring Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, and was the first motion picture screened in the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom. The film was produced by Chamanlal Doongaji, who in 1932 founded ''South India Movietone'' in Bangalore. Major literary works have been adapted to the Kannada screen such as B. V. ''Avva'' is a 2008 Indian Kannada language drama film directed by Kavitha Lankesh and produced by Pyramid Saimira. The film stars Shruti, Duniya Vijay and Smitha in the lead roles. ''America! America!!'' is a 1997 Indian Kannada-language family drama film written and directed by Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar. It stars Ramesh Aravind, Akshay Anand and Hema Panchamukhi, with H. G. Dattatreya, Vaishali Kasaravalli and Shivaram in supporting roles. The plot revolves around three childhood friends hailing from a coastal village of Karnataka who are entangled in marital issues with a major portion of the story taking place in the United States. Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar is an Indian director, actor, screenwriter and a lyricist who predominantly works in Kannada Cinema. He made his film debut as a screenplay writer in ''Kadina Benki'' (1986) which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film and the Karnataka State Award. The film was an adaptation of Kannada novel of same name written by Ranganath Shyamrao Lokapura. Plot summary The film is based on the story of a Brahmin family during the pre independence and post independence periods of India. The protagonist Narmada Thayi is the second wife of Appa Sahib, a freedom fighter. The childless couple decide to adopt the child of Venkobanna, a close relative. Venkobanna has other plans in mind when he gives away his child in adoption. He calculates that his son will inherit the family's money and property. Bolwar Mahammad Kunhi
Bolwar Mahammad Kunhi (born 1951) is an Indian short story writer, novelist, playwright and scriptwriter. He writes in the Kannada language. He is the first Indian writer to introduce Muslim ethos and culture into creative Kannada prose. He is the only Indian writer conferred with Central Sahitya Academy twice for creative prose. He is the first ever Kannada writer conferred with Bala Sahitya Puraskar by Central Sahitya Academy. His works have been translated into other Indian languages including English.
