Karl Elsey
Karl William Elsey (born 20 November 1958) is a Welsh former professional footballer. His clubs included Swansea City, Queens Park Rangers, Newport County, Cardiff City, Gillingham, Reading and Maidstone United. In total he made over 450 Football League appearances. Career Elsey joined Pembroke Borough from local amateur football and had a brief spell with Swansea City in the 1978–79 season before returning to Pembroke Borough. He signed for Queens Park Rangers in January 1979, but failed to establish himself. Elsey moved to Newport County in July 1980, during the most successful period in the club's history. Elsey was part of the team that won promotion and the Welsh Cup and in the subsequent season reached the quarter-final of the 1981 European Cup Winners Cup. He moved to Cardiff City in September 1983 in a move that saw Elsey and Nigel Vaughan join Cardiff from Newport in exchange for Tarki Micallef, John Lewis and Linden Jones. The Kent County League is a football competition based in Kent, England. The league has seven senior divisions – a Premier Division, Division One East and West, Division Two East and West and Division Three East and West. It sits below the Southern Counties East League Division One (step 6 of the National League System) since the 2016–17 season. Previously it fed the Kent Invicta League from the Invicta League's formation in 2011 to its merger with the Southern Counties East League in 2016. ''For the Welsh cricketer see Lyndon Jones''. Linden Jones (born 5 March 1961) is a Welsh former professional footballer. Club career Jones was born in New Tredegar, Monmouthshire. He began his career at Cardiff City joining them as an apprentice at the age of sixteen. He made his début on 24 February 1979 in a 1–0 victory over Leyton Orient at the age of seventeen. Four days later on 28 February he became the youngest player ever to be sent off playing for Cardiff when he was red carded during a 4–1 win over Blackburn Rovers. He became an important player for the club over the next few years especially during the 1982–83 season when he helped them to promotion. John Lewis (footballer Born 1955)
John Lewis (born 15 October 1955) is a former Welsh footballer. Career Lewis was born in Tredegar and was spotted by Cardiff City while playing for Pontllanfraith in a Welsh Football League match and was quickly offered a contract by then manager Jimmy Andrews. He made his Cardiff debut against Blackburn Rovers in September 1978. He went on to become a regular fixture in the Bluebirds line-up over the next few years before eventually leaving the club along with Linden Jones and Tarki Micallef to join Newport County in a swap deal that saw Nigel Vaughan and Karl Elsey go the other way and join Cardiff. After establishing himself in the County side he went on to become the club's player-manager when Jimmy Mullen left for Aberdeen in 1987 but could not prevent the club being relegated in the 1986–87 season and was subsequently sacked after Newport took only one point from their first six games in the following season. Tarki Micallef
Constantinous "Tarki" Micallef (born 24 January 1961) is a Welsh former professional footballer. Career The son of a Greek restaurateur, Micallef was born in the Grangetown area of Cardiff and was a Welsh schoolboy international before joining Cardiff City as a trainee, working his way up to the first team. Micallef made his debut in December 1978 at the age of seventeen against Sheffield United, which was to be his only appearance for the Bluebirds that year. Eventually, he established himself in the team during the 1981–82 season, but moved to Newport County as part of a five-man swap deal (including John Lewis and Linden Jones) in exchange for Nigel Vaughan and Karl Elsey in September 1983. Nigel Mark Vaughan (born 20 May 1959 in Caerleon) is a Welsh former professional footballer and Wales international. He gained ten international caps during his football career. Club career Newport County Vaughan started his playing career at his local professional side Newport County making 224 appearances and scoring 32 goals for the club. After leaving Caerleon Comprehensive School in 1975 he made his Football league debut against Rochdale as a left back at the age of 17 by manager Jimmy Scoular. The following week he played against Bournemouth FC in the FA Cup – both games finished goalless. His performances in both games were enough to get him two Welsh Youth National Team appearances against England (Wales were beat 2–3 on aggregate). The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was a European football club competition contested annually by the winners of domestic cup competitions.
