Karen Schreier
Karen Elizabeth Schreier (born July 29, 1956) is a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota and was the 36th United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. Early life and education Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Schreier earned an Artium Baccalaureus degree from Saint Louis University in 1978 and a Juris Doctor from the Saint Louis University School of Law in 1981. Career Schreier worked as a judicial law clerk for South Dakota Supreme Court Justice Francis G. Dunn from 1981 until 1982. Schreier worked in private law practice in Sioux Falls from 1982 until 1993. She then became the United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota in 1993. She became the first woman to serve as U.S. Attorney in South Dakota and served in that capacity until her appointment to the federal bench in 1999. The United States District Court for the District of South Dakota (in case citations, D.S.D.) is the United States District Court or the Federal district court, whose jurisdiction for issues pertaining to federal law or diversity for the state of South Dakota. The court is based in Sioux Falls with other courthouses in Rapid City, Pierre, and Aberdeen. The district was created in 1889, when the Dakota Territory was divided into North and South Dakota. Appeals from the District of South Dakota are taken to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit (except for patent claims and claims against the U.S. government under the Tucker Act, which are appealed to the Federal Circuit). Senior Status
Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the Federal judiciary of the United States, federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the President of the United States, president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. Some U.S. states have similar systems for senior judges. Ted McBride
Ted McBride (1949–2018) was an American attorney and 37th United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. Early life and education Ted McBride graduated with a J.D. University of South Dakota School of Law in 1978. Career McBride initially served as the interim U.S. Attorney in 1993, after the United States Senate voted to not confirm the appointment of Kevin Schieffer after the controversial handling of the Sue-Dinosaur legal dispute. McBride was then appointed by President Bill Clinton to be the United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota in 1999 to replace outgoing U.S. Attorney Karen Schreier, who was appointed a U.S. District Judge by Clinton. McBride was sworn in as U.S. Attorney later that year. He resigned shortly after the accession of George W. Bush to the U.S. Presidency. In law, a person is acting in a position if they are not serving in the position on a permanent basis.
