Kapchagai
Konaev ( kk, Қонаев; russian: Конаев), previously known as Kapchagay ( kk, Қапчағай, links=no; russian: Капшагай, links=no or ), is a city with the Almaty Region of Kazakhstan. It is located on the Ili River, and has been built along with the construction of Kapshagay Dam on that river in the 1960s. The dam has formed Kapchagay Reservoir (a.k.a. Lake Kapshagai), a popular weekend destination for beach-goers from Almaty. Population: Many of Konaev's inhabitants fled the city after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, but its population saw a resurgence in 2000 and has since returned to pre-dissolution numbers. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's reforms of 17 March 2022 included provisions which renamed Kapshagay to Konaev (after Dinmukhamed Kunaev) and made the city the new capital of Almaty Region following its old capital, Taldykorgan, being separated from the region and becoming the capital of the newly-created Zhetysu Region. Zhetysu Region
Jetisu Region (; ), sometimes spelled Zhetysu Region, is a region of Kazakhstan. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced on 16 March 2022 that the region would be created. The area split off from Almaty Region when Tokayev's decree came into force on 8 June 2022. Taldykorgan
Taldykorgan ( kk, Талдықорған/Taldyqorğan; russian: Талдыкорган), known as ''Taldy-Kurgan'' until 1993, is the capital (called an administrative center) of Zhetysu Region, Kazakhstan. According to the 2010 Kazakh Census Results, the population is 143,407. The town was founded in the 19th century as the village of Gavrilovka and developed into the present city on the same site. The town grew slowly in its early years. After the completion of the railway connection many Russian farmers moved to the area of the town. Russians are the second-largest ethnic group after the Kazakhs among the 70 nationalities living in Taldykorgan. A total of 143,000 people live in the city. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev
Kassym-Jomart Kemeluly Tokayev ( kk, Қасым-Жомарт Кемелұлы Тоқаев, Qasym-Jomart Kemelūly Toqaev ; born 17 May 1953) is a Kazakh politician and diplomat who is currently serving as the President of Kazakhstan since 12 June 2019. Shortly before that, he served as acting president after the resignation of Nursultan Nazarbayev, who previously held the presidential post for nearly three decades. Born in Alma-Ata (now Almaty), Tokayev attended the Moscow State Institute of International Relations where after graduating in 1975, he worked as a diplomat in Singapore and China. Kapchagay Reservoir
Kapchagay Reservoir, also spelled Qapshaghay Bogeni Reservoir and sometimes referred to as Lake Kapchagay, is a major reservoir in Almaty Region in southeastern Kazakhstan, approximately 80 kilometres north of Almaty. The 140 kilometre long lake is formed by a dam on the Ili River which flows from the mountains in the east towards Lake Balkhash to the northwest. It is named after the town of Kapchagay, which is located on its western bank. During the summer months the lake attracts a number of tourists from Almaty, who frequent its beachy shores on the weekends. In some parts of the Kapshagay reservoir, a coastal zone was created, which is now known as Kapshagay lake (* because of its impressive size (length 180 km, width 22 km, depth up to 50 m). The Kapshagay Hydroelectric Power Plant ( kk, Қапшағай су электр станциясы, ''Qapshaǵaı sý elektr stantsııasy''; russian: Капшагайская ГЭС, earlier Капчагайская ГЭС) is a hydroelectricity power plant on the Ili River in Almaty Province of Kazakhstan.
