Kansas City Cowboys (American Association)
The Kansas City Cowboys were a professional baseball team based in Kansas City, Missouri, for two seasons in to in the American Association. They were the third, and last iteration of this franchise name, following the Kansas City Cowboys of the Union Association in and the Kansas City Cowboys of the National League in . The franchise used Association Park as their home field in 1888, then moved to Exposition Park for the last game that season, and all of 1889. The team began the 1888 season on April 18 with part-time outfielder Dave Rowe as their player-manager. They lost their first game, 10–3, to Tony Mullane and the Cincinnati Reds, but won the next day. They compiled a win–loss record of 43–89 in their initial season, finishing last out of the league's eight teams, and went through two managerial changes. Sam Barkley
Samuel E. Barkley (May 24, 1858 – April 20, 1912) was an American Major League Baseball second baseman. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, he played for four teams in six seasons from to . Career Barkley began his career with the Toledo Blue Stockings of the Northwestern League, and was a member of their championship team in . He was still with the team when they joined the American Association for the season, and was the everyday second baseman. He batted .306 that season and led the league in doubles with 39. Following the season, Toledo and the St. Louis Browns made an arrangement in the off-season for a trade involving several players, but the trade broke down after the waiting period and only Barkley and one other player actually played with St. Louis. William Henry Watkins (May 5, 1858 – June 9, 1937), sometimes known as "Wattie," or "Watty," was a Canadian-born baseball player, manager, executive and team owner whose career in organized baseball spanned 47 years from 1876 to 1922. He began playing organized baseball in Canada and Michigan and played one season of Major League Baseball as an infielder for the Indianapolis Hoosiers in 1884. He was a manager of five major league clubs and several minor league clubs, including stints with the Indianapolis Hoosiers (1884–85), Detroit Wolverines (1885–1888), Kansas City Cowboys (1888–89), St. Louis Browns (1893) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1898–99). A right fielder, abbreviated RF, is the outfielder in baseball or softball who plays defense in right field. Right field is the area of the outfield to the right of a person standing at home plate and facing towards the pitcher's mound.
