Kambei Mori
Kambei Mori or , also known as Mōri Kambei Shigeyoshi , was a Japanese mathematician in the Edo period. Life and work Some 16th-century sources suggest that Mori studied in China, but such claims are inconclusive or rejected by historians. What is known with certainty is that he started a school in Kyoto and he wrote several influential and widely discussed books which dealt with arithmetic and the use of the abacus. One of his students was Yoshida Mitsuyoshi the author of ''Jinkōki,'' which is the oldest extant Japanese mathematical text. Yoshio Mikami
was a Japanese mathematician and historian of '' Japanese mathematics''. He was born February 16, 1875, in Kotachi, Hiroshima prefecture. He attended the High School of Tohoku University, and in 1911 was admitted to the Imperial University of Tokyo. He studied history of Japanese and Chinese mathematics. David Eugene Smith (January 21, 1860 – July 29, 1944) was an American mathematician, educator, and editor. Education and career David Eugene Smith is considered one of the founders of the field of mathematics education. Smith was born in Cortland, New York, to Abram P. Smith, attorney and surrogate judge, and Mary Elizabeth Bronson, who taught her young son Latin and Greek. He attended Syracuse University, graduating in 1881 (Ph. D., 1887; LL.D., 1905). He studied to be a lawyer concentrating in arts and humanities, but accepted an instructorship in mathematics at the Cortland Normal School in 1884 where he attended as a young man. Tony Rothman (born 1953) is an American theoretical physicist, academic and writer. Early life Tony is the son of physicist and science fiction writer Milton A. Rothman and psychotherapist Doris W. Rothman. He holds a B.A. from Swarthmore College, (1975) and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin (1981), where he studied at the Center for Relativity. He continued on post-doctoral fellowships at University of Oxford, Oxford, Moscow State University and the University of Cape Town. The is an abacus developed in Japan. It is derived from the ancient Chinese suanpan, imported to Japan in the 14th century. Like the suanpan, the soroban is still used today, despite the proliferation of practical and affordable pocket electronic calculators. Construction The soroban is composed of an odd number of columns or rods, each having beads: one separate bead having a value of five, called and four beads each having a value of one, called . Sangaku or San Gaku ( ja, 算額, lit=calculation tablet) are Japanese geometrical problems or theorems on wooden tablets which were placed as offerings at Shinto shrines or Buddhist temples during the Edo period by members of all social classes. Helaine Selin (born 1946) is an American librarian, historian of science, author and the editor of several bestselling books. Career Selin attended Binghamton University, where she earned her bachelor's degree. She received her MLS from SUNY Albany.
