Kaliti Prison
Kaliti Prison'' is a maximum security prison in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Commonly referred to as a gulag, it serves as the main prison of the country. It is 11 km south of central Addis Ababa, in Akaky Kaliti, the southernmost subcity of the nation's capital. The original prison compound is a makeshift structure that was built after 1991 when the Derg regime fell and was not intended as a prison. Most of the structures built by 2004 had been built by prisoners by their own means and with help from NGOs. Description Part of the prison consists of sheet-metal shacks arranged in a dense maze. Within the prison there are 8 zones (however zone 8 is not in use according to the recollection of Martin Schibbye). The group Zone 9 bloggers is named after a ''non-existent'' ninth zone. Reeyot Alemu
Reeyot Alemu is an Ethiopian journalist who served a 5-year prison sentence following an unfair trial in which anti-terrorism laws were used to silence her writing. She won the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize in 2013. Biography Reeyot Alemu was born in 1980. She was a high school teacher until 2000, when she started working as a columnist for several local newspapers including the independent weekly newspaper ''Feteh''. In 2010, she founded her own publishing house and became the editor in chief of her own monthly magazine called ''Change'', both of which were closed. Her articles covered social and political affairs as well as poverty and gender issues. Hailu Shawul
Hailu Shawul (also spelled Shawel or Shawil; gez, ሃይሉ ሻዉል; 1936 – 6 October 2016) was an Ethiopian politician and civil engineer who was the leader of the Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD) during the 2005 Ethiopian general election. He was also the leader of All Ethiopian Unity Party from 1996 to 2013. He died on 6 October 2016, while receiving treatment at a hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. Johan Karl Persson (born March 3, 1982) is a Swedish photographer who was convicted by the Ethiopian government to eleven years in prison for what it claimed were terrorist crimes. Persson was sentenced on December 27, 2011, but was later pardoned and released on September 10, 2012. Career Persson studied at the School of Photography at Studium in Gothenburg, Sweden. Martin Karl Schibbye (; born October 17, 1980) is a Swedish journalist and former editor. After an assignment in the conflict-ridden Ogaden region of Ethiopia he was sentenced to eleven years in prison for terrorist crimes on December 27, 2011, but was later pardoned and released on 10 September 2012. He was held at the notorious Kaliti Prison. Career Schibbye became editor of Sweden's Revolutionary Communist Youth magazine ''Rebell'' in his twenties. Eskinder Nega
Eskinder Nega ( Ge'ez: እስክንድር ነጋ, born 7 November 1969) is an Ethiopian journalist, blogger and politician who has been jailed at least ten times by the Ethiopian government on convictions for treason and terrorism. Early life Eskinder was born to highly educated parents, his father having done graduate work at Rutgers University and his mother at the American University of Beirut. They eventually divorced and his mother, with whom Eskinder lived, opened a clinic. Eskinder is of Amhara ethnic heritage. Eskinder attended Sandford School in Addis Ababa. Berhanu Nega ( am, ብርሃኑ ነጋ; born 6 December 1958) is an Ethiopian politician who is serving as the current Ministry of Education (Ethiopia), Minister of Education of Ethiopia. He previously was the mayor elect of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the 2005 Ethiopian general elections. Birtukan Mideksa ( Amharic: ብርቱካን ሚደቅሳ; born 27 April 1974) is an Ethiopian politician and former judge who is serving as chairwoman of the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) since 2018. Serkalem Fasil (Amharic: ሰርካለም ፋሲል; born c. 1978) is an Ethiopian journalist and former co-publisher of the newspapers '' Asqual'', '' Menilik'', and '' Satenaw''. Temesgen Desalegn () is an Ethiopian journalist. As editor of the independent weekly newspaper ''Feteh'', Desalegn went to court many times and was imprisoned from 2014–2017 as a result of his criticism of the national government, drawing protests on his behalf from the international press freedom groups Committee to Protect Journalists and Article 19 and from Amnesty International.
