Kalgan, Western Australia
Kalgan is a small town in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The town is situated on the banks of the Kalgan River and was first known as ''Kalganup'' which means "place of first camp" or "place of many waters". Indigenous Australians used the area as a meeting place up to 19,000 years ago. The name was first recorded in 1831, when explorer Alexander Collie charted the area. Land was set aside for a townsite in 1837 and was sparsely settled, with approximately a dozen people living in the area in 1900. The town was gazetted in 1912 following land being opened up in the area. The Upper Kalgan Hall was constructed in 1912 and became a focal point for the community. By 1913, the population was approximately 150 people. The Lower Kalgan Hall was constructed in 1954. City Of Albany
The City of Albany is a local government area in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about south-southeast of Perth, the capital of Western Australia. It covers an area of , including the Greater Albany metropolitan area and the Port of Albany, as well as the surrounding agricultural district and some national parks. The City of Albany had a population of over 36,000 at the 2016 census. History The Municipality of Albany was gazetted in 1871. It was initially headed by a chairman, with William Finlay becoming the first mayor in 1885. The Albany Road Board was gazetted in 1896. Alexander Collie
Dr Alexander Collie (2 June 1793 – 8 November 1835) was a Scottish surgeon and botanist who journeyed to Western Australia in 1829, where he was an explorer and Colonial Surgeon. Early life Collie was born in Insch in Aberdeenshire, Scotland on 2 June 1793 to Alexander and Christina Collie (née Leslie). The youngest of three sons, Collie studied medicine in Edinburgh before moving to London to further his studies. In January 1813, he joined the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons and became an assistant surgeon in the navy. Career He sailed on the frigate to Tenerife, China and the East Indies, before returning to Europe to study botany, mineralogy and chemistry. In 1824 he was a surgeon on board and travelled to Africa, Brazil, Chile, the Sandwich Islands, California, Kamchatka Peninsula, Taiwan and Mexico. Collie was ship's surgeon on . Oyster Harbour
Oyster Harbour is a permanently open estuary, north of King George Sound, which covers an area of near Albany, Western Australia. The harbour is used to shelter a fishing fleet carrying out commercial fishing and the farming of oysters and mussels via a dredged channel around Emu Point to the Emu Point Boat Pens. A significant number of waterbirds use the harbour for feeding. The place is currently a family tourist center. Oyster Harbour is fed by the King and Kalgan Rivers and discharges into King George Sound. A planned locality of Oyster Harbour on the Lower King Road is under construction with 2,300 home sites. Great Southern Grammar is an independent non-denominational Christian co-educational primary and secondary day and boarding school, located in the Great Southern regional town of Kalgan, Western Australia between the King River and the Kalgan River. The school is situated approximately East of Albany, a regional centre south-southeast of Perth. The campus has a total area of bordered by Nanarup Road to the north, Oyster Harbour to the south, Johnston Creek to the west and the Kalgan River to the east. The Heritage Council of Western Australia is the Government of Western Australia agency created to identify, conserve and promote places of cultural heritage significance in the state. Prior to its creation, considerable variance in policy and political controversies arose over heritage issues in Western Australia, such as the Barracks Arch and the demolition of buildings in the Perth central business district. It was preceded by the Western Australian Heritage Committee, which had been heavily involved in the 1988 Australian Bicentenary, and the setting up of the W.A. Heritage Trails Network. Lower Kalgan Hall
The Lower Kalgan Hall is a heritage listed building located on Nanarup Road not far from Oyster Harbour and the Kalgan River approximately east of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The building is set in a large gravel parking area amongst farmland. The building is fibre board on a timber frame with a corrugated iron roof and has a gabled portico over the main entrance. The current hall was built in 1954 to replace on older hall that had been the centre of the community for many years. The older hall no longer accommodated the growing population so it was replaced. Many of the building materials of the older hall were reused to build the kitchen in the existing hall. In 1998 the hall was renovated using funds from a grant, including repainting and stripping and resealing the floor boards. Upper Kalgan Hall
Upper Kalgan Hall is a heritage listed building and archaeological site located in Kalgan, close to the Kalgan River north east of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The hall is constructed from local timbers and corrugated iron and was completed in 1912. It is a single story rectangular building with a hipped corrugated iron roof and walls. The hall served the local community as a school, a church for travelling ministers, and a venue for social club meetings and dances. The cost of the hall was £110 with the state government providing half the funds. The jarrah wood used to build the hall was cut and donated by Messrs James and Hill and was erected free of charge by Messrs Wiley and Allwood. In 2008 plans were made to commence the restoration of the hall, to be completed in 2012 ready for the hall's centenary. Albany is a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. Albany is named for the port and regional city of Western Australia which falls within its borders. Kalgan River
The Kalgan River is a river in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Geography The river is long and, along with the King River, drains into Oyster Harbour. The lower 9 km of the river take the form of a drowned river valley with steep hillsides of forest and farmland, and the occasional outcrop of granite. The river's source is west of the Stirling Ranges. It rises north-west of Kendenup and flows generally southwards until it reaches Oyster Harbour about 10 km north-east of Albany. The Kalgan River is the region’s fourth largest river in terms of average annual flow (53,400 megalitres), and has the third largest catchment area (2,562 km²). The upper reaches of the Kalgan River lie within the National Park. These tributaries are marginally saline to brackish, suggesting the levels of salinity are natural.
