KW Institute For Contemporary Art
The KW Institute for Contemporary Art (also known as Kunst-Werke) is a contemporary art institution located in Auguststraße 69 in Berlin-Mitte, Germany. Klaus Biesenbach was the founding director of KW; the current director is Krist Gruijthuijsen. KW collaborates with other national and international contemporary art venues, such as MoMA PS1 in New York City, New York, the Julia Stoschek Collection in Düsseldorf/Berlin, Mophradat in Belgium, and the Ernst Schering Foundation, Schering Stiftung in Berlin. History The Institute was founded July 1, 1991, less than two years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, in a derelict Berlin factory that once produced margarine. Mitte () (German for "middle" or "center") is a central locality () of Berlin in the eponymous district () of Mitte. Until 2001, it was itself an autonomous district. Hans-Peter Feldmann
Hans-Peter Feldmann (born 1941 in Düsseldorf, Germany) is a German visual artist. Feldmann's approach to art-making is one of collecting, ordering and re-presenting. Early life and career In the 1960s, Feldmann studied painting at the University of Arts and Industrial Design Linz in Austria. He began working in 1968, producing the first of the small handmade books that would become a signature part of his work. These modest books, simply entitled Bilde (Picture) or Bilder (Pictures), would include one or more reproductions from a certain type—knees of women, shoes, chairs, film stars, etc.--their subjects isolated in their ubiquity and presented without captions. Heinz Emigholz
Heinz Emigholz (born 22 January 1948 in Achim, near Bremen, Germany) is a filmmaker, actor, artist, writer and producer. He lives and works in Berlin and Malta. Klaus Vom Bruch
Klaus vom Bruch (born 1952 in Cologne) is a German media artist who is considered a pioneer of German video art. Biography Vom Bruch studied conceptual art at the California Institute of the Arts with John Baldessari from 1975 to 1976, and philosophy at the University of Cologne from 1976 to 1980. With Ulrike Rosenbach and Marcel Odenbach he formed the art group ATV. An early video by vom Bruch, "Schleyerband," contains television clips from 1977 and 1978, with footage of the Red Army Faction. Dara Birnbaum
Dara Birnbaum (born 1946) is an American video and installation artist. Birnbaum entered the nascent field of video art in the mid-to-late 1970s challenging the gendered biases of the period and television’s ever-growing presence within the American household. Her oeuvre primarily addresses ideological and aesthetic features of mass media through the intersection of video art and television. She uses video to reconstruct television imagery using materials such as archetypal formats as quizzes, soap operas, and sports programmes. Eleanor Antin (née Fineman; February 27, 1935) is an American performance artist, film-maker, installation artist, conceptual artist and feminist artist. Early life and education Eleanor Fineman was born in the Bronx on February 27, 1935. Her parents, Sol Fineman and Jeanette Efron, were Polish Jews who had recently immigrated to the United States. She attended the Music and Art High School in New York, New School for Social Research, and then the City College of New York, graduating in 1958. There she met David Antin, a poet who would become her husband in 1961. She studied acting and had some roles, including performing in a staged reading with Ossie Davis at the first NAACP convention. He has made urban interventions and museum installations that reveal historical and political undercurrents in photography, cinema, public space and architecture.
