KODA (Denmark)
KODA is the collecting society for songwriters, composers and music publishers of Denmark. Its role is to act as an agent for its members in order to collect license fees whenever their musical works are performed in public, broadcast or transmitted, and to pay out performing royalties. In 1935, an agreement reached with and a concession were given by the Danish Ministry of Culture in which the public performance rights were established. In April 2020, YouTube's licensing deal with KODA expired. On July 30, 2020, YouTube threatened to block music videos containing content from KODA over royalty fees. KODA claimed that YouTube wanted to reduce royalty payments by 70 percent. Polaris Nordic, an alliance of societies consisting of KODA, TONO (Norway), and Teosto (Finland), has been negotiating with YouTube for a new Scandinavia-wide licensing agreement. Songwriters
A songwriter is a musician who professionally composes musical compositions or writes lyrics for songs, or both. The writer of the music for a song can be called a composer, although this term tends to be used mainly in the classical music genre and film scoring. TONO
TONO is a Norwegian corporation that administers copyrights for music in Norway. It is owned and governed by its members; composers, music publishers and text-writers. Through the managing agreement the originators give TONO an exclusive right to administer the members' performing rights in Norway. By 2006 the number of members reached about 14,000, through agreements of reciprocation with about 60 other corporations, organised under the umbrella-organisation CISAC. TONO ''de facto'' manages the whole world-repertoire. TONO was originally created in 1928 under the name of ''Norsk Komponistforenings Internasjonale Musikkbyrå''. Teosto
Teosto (Finnish: Säveltäjäin Tekijänoikeustoimisto Teosto r.y.) is a non-profit performance rights organization that collects royalties on behalf of songwriters and composers in Finland. Teosto is a member of the Confédération Internationale des Sociétés d'Auteurs et Compositeurs (CISAC). It represents 29 000 Finnish, and nearly three million foreign composers, songwriters, arrangers and publishers. The organization's clients are 29,000 music-using companies and communities. Teosto has 75 important people making decisions. Its CEO has been Katri Sipilä since 2001, and composer Kim Kuusi as chairman since 2011. Teosto paid its clients 52.3 million euros in 2014 and with reimbursements from other organizations, Teosto's revenue grew up to 60.1 million euros. A performance rights organisation (PRO), also known as a performing rights society, provides intermediary functions, particularly collection of royalties, between copyright holders and parties who wish to use copyrighted works ''publicly'' in locations such as shopping and dining venues.
