KNNN-LP, VHF analog channel 6, most recently known on-air as Hella Radio 87.7 FM, was a low-powered indie and alternative rock radio and television station licensed to Redding, California, United States. Founded September 16, 2003 by Venture Technologies Group, LLC, the station was last owned by Walker Broadcast Group LLC. The station formerly operated and marketed itself as a radio station using the audio portion of NTSC channel 6 (87.75 MHz) to broadcast audio (most FM radio receivers can receive this frequency at 87.7 on the low end of the FM dial). Although the station no longer airs over the air due to the FCC mandated digital television conversion on low-powered stations, Hella Radio continues to air online. Redding, California
Redding is the economic and cultural capital of the Shasta Cascade region of Northern California and the county seat of Shasta County. Redding lies along the Sacramento River, north of Sacramento, and south of California's northern border with Oregon. Its population is 95,542 as of the 2022 census, up from 89,861 from the 2010 census. Etymology During the Gold Rush, the area that now comprises Redding was called Poverty Flats. In 1868 the first land agent for the Central Pacific Railroad, a former Sacramento politician named Benjamin Bernard Redding, bought property in Poverty Flats on behalf of the railroad so that it could build a northern terminus there. In the process of building the terminus, the railroad also built a town in the same area, which they named Redding in honor of Benjamin Redding. Digital Television Transition In The United States
The digital transition in the United States was the switchover from analog to exclusively digital broadcasting of terrestrial television programming. According to David Rehr, then president and CEO of the National Association of Broadcasters, this transition represented "the most significant advancement of television technology since color TV was introduced." For full-power TV stations, the transition went into effect on June 12, 2009, with stations ending regular programming on their analog signals no later than 11:59 p.m. local time that day. Under the Digital Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005, full-power broadcasting of analog television in the United States was initially planned to have ceased after February 17, 2009. KIXE-TV, virtual and VHF digital channel 9, is a Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member television station licensed to Redding, California, United States, and also serving Chico. The station is owned by the Northern California Educational Television Association. KIXE's studios are located along North Market Street on the north side of Redding and its transmitter is located atop Shasta Bally. History KIXE went on the air in black and white in 1964. In 1967, the station moved from Chico to Redding. It began broadcasting in color in 1971. The station was originally located on Industrial Street in Redding. It soon expanded to a bigger facility on North Market Street ( State Route 273), north of downtown. The new building had space for television broadcasting courses at Shasta College. KWLZ (99.3 FM) is an American commercial radio station licensed to Shasta Lake, California, serving the Northern California area. History For over a decade, KNNN aired a CHR music format branded as "Mix 99.3". From its inception until the "Mix 99.3" brand was introduced, the station was known as "K-9 FM", and played a pop-based Adult Contemporary format. The original "K-9" AC format was the result of a listener voting process following a months-long format testing experiment, where a different format was played every hour of the day. In January 2007, 99.3 flipped to country as "99.3 Hank FM."
