Waukon, Iowa
Waukon is a city in Makee Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, United States, and the county seat of Allamakee County. The population was 3,827 at the time of the 2020 census. History Waukon is often said to be named for Waukon Decorah, a Ho Chunk (Winnebago) leader who was a U.S. ally during the 1832 Black Hawk War, although the city is also said to be named for his son Chief John Waukon. Winnebagos lived in this area of Iowa in the 1840s, before being forced to relocate to Minnesota. The first white settler arrived in 1849, and the town was founded and the Waukon Post Office opened in 1853. A courthouse was completed in 1861, and the county seat was moved to Waukon in 1867 after 8 elections attempting to decide the location of the county seat.W. E. KVIK (104.7 FM) is a radio station licensed to serve Decorah, the county seat of Winneshiek County, Iowa. The station is owned by Wennes Communications Stations, Inc. KVIK broadcasts a classic hits music format to northeast Iowa. On weekends, the station broadcasts live NASCAR Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series motor racing via Performance Racing Network and Motor Racing Network. KDEC (1240 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station broadcasting in Decorah, Iowa. KDEC airs an adult contemporary format branded as "The River". KDEC broadcasts on a frequency shared with local non-commercial college radio station KWLC. History In 1926, Decorah's first radio station started broadcasting from the south end of the second floor of the Ben Bear building, with Charles Greenley the announcer. Charles Greenley had been an employee of Ben Bear in various capacities. He was put in charge of the new radio station, known by the call letters KCGA.
