KDEC (1240 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station broadcasting in Decorah, Iowa. KDEC airs an adult contemporary format branded as "The River". KDEC broadcasts on a frequency shared with local non-commercial college radio station KWLC. History In 1926, Decorah's first radio station started broadcasting from the south end of the second floor of the Ben Bear building, with Charles Greenley the announcer. Charles Greenley had been an employee of Ben Bear in various capacities. He was put in charge of the new radio station, known by the call letters KCGA. In December 1926, Luther College founded its own station known as KWLC. Decorah, Iowa
Decorah is a city in and the county seat of Winneshiek County, Iowa, United States. The population was 7,587 at the time of the 2020 census. Decorah is located at the intersection of State Highway 9 and U.S. Route 52, and is the largest community in Winneshiek County. History Decorah was the site of a Ho-Chunk village beginning ''circa'' 1840. Several Ho-Chunks had settled along the Upper Iowa River that year when the U.S. Army forced them to remove from Wisconsin. In 1848, the United States removed the Ho-Chunks again to a new reservation in Minnesota, opening their Iowa villages to white settlers. The first European-Americans to settle were the Day family from Tazewell County, Virginia. According to local Congregationalist minister Rev. HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for an in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. It generally simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by AM and FM radio stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with a few implementations outside North America. The term "on channel" is a misnomer because the system actually broadcasts on the ordinarily unused channels adjacent to an existing radio station's allocation. KMRV (1160 AM broadcasting, AM, "99.1 The River") was a commercial radio station that served the Waukon, Iowa, area. KMRV was originally a daytime-only station broadcasting on 1140 kHz, with the call letters KNEI. The station was last owned by Wennes Communications. KMRV's format continues to be heard on KDEC (AM), KDEC (1240 AM) in Decorah, Iowa, Decorah and 100.5 FM (HD Radio, HD2) KDHK, which replaced KMRV as the source of translator K256CS (99.1 FM) at closure. Wennes Communications surrendered KMRV's license to the Federal Communications Commission on June 3, 2021 for cancellation; the FCC cancelled the station's license on June 4, 2021. KVIK broadcasts a classic hits music format to northeast Iowa.
