KMA-FM (99.1 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a talk radio format as a simulcast of KMA, Shenandoah, Iowa. Licensed to Clarinda, Iowa, United States, the station is currently owned by KMAland Broadcasting, LLC History What is today KMA-FM went on the air in 1977 on 106.3 MHz as KSWI. The first callsign reflected its initial owners, Southwest Iowa Stereo. Not long after signing on, however, Kendall Light, the station's owner, died. In 1979, the station was sold by Light's estate and became KQWI. In 1989, KQWI moved to 106.1 MHz and was able to broadcast with 50,000 watts; by the fall of 1989, it began its first stint as KMA-FM. KMA (AM)
KMA (960 AM) is a radio station licensed to serve Shenandoah, Iowa. History The station was founded in 1925 by seed salesman Earl May. In 1925 Henry A. Field, owner of Field's Nursery in Shenandoah and a business rival of May, founded a competing radio station, KFNF. While both stations offered farm news, the two were to become most competitive by offering live productions of hillbilly music. According to KMA's website, more than a million people traveled to small-town Shenandoah to hear the music. May built the station headquarters and Mayfair Auditorium at the Mayfair Theatre (the theatre being closed in 1963, the studio demolished in 1964 due to its being declared structurally unsafe by the Iowa State Fire Marshall, and the entire building being demolished in 1966) across the street from the nursery business. Shenandoah is a city in Page and Fremont counties in Iowa, United States. The population was 4,925 at the time of the 2020 U.S. Census. Once referred to as the "seed and nursery center of the world," Shenandoah is the home to Earl May Seed Company and the radio station KMA, founded by Earl E. May. The early live radio stations gave many performers their start, including The Everly Brothers and Charlie Haden. History Shenandoah, originally known as Fair Oaks, was platted in 1870, shortly after the arrival of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad into the neighborhood. Clarinda is a city in and the county seat of Page County, Iowa. It is located in Nodaway Township. The population was 5,369 at the time of the 2020 census. History Clarinda was founded in 1851, and incorporated on December 8, 1866. Many stories are told of such notables as Jesse James frequently passing through. The town is named for Clarinda Buck, who according to legend carried water to the surveyors while Page County was first being surveyed. Westwood One is an American radio network owned by Cumulus Media. The company syndicates talk, music, and sports programming. The company takes its name from an earlier network also named Westwood One, a company founded in 1978. The company was, at various times, managed by CBS Radio, the radio arm of CBS Corporation and Viacom. It was later purchased by the private equity firm The Gores Group before merging with Dial Global in 2011. In December 2013, Dial Global was, in turn, acquired by Cumulus Media. Prior to the sale's completion, Dial Global re-assumed the Westwood One name. FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation (FM). Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to provide high fidelity sound over broadcast radio. FM broadcasting is capable of higher fidelity—that is, more accurate reproduction of the original program sound—than other broadcasting technologies, such as AM broadcasting.
