The Karabiner Modell 1931 (K. 31/Kar. 31/Mq. 31) is a magazine (firearm), magazine-fed, Bolt action#Straight pull, straight-pull bolt-action rifle. It was the standard issue rifle of the Military of Switzerland, Swiss armed forces from 1933 until 1958 though examples remained in service into the 1970s. It has a 6-round removable magazine, and is chambered for the 7.5×55mm Swiss ''Gewehrpatrone 1911'' or GP 11, a cartridge with ballistic qualities similar to the 7.62×51mm NATO/.308 Winchester cartridge. Each rifle included a 6-round detachable box magazine with matching stamped serial number. A stripper clip can be used to load the magazine from the top of the receiver. The Karabiner Modell 1931 replaced both the Schmidt–Rubin#Model 1911 Rifle, Model 1911 rifle and carbine and was gradually replaced by the Stgw 57 from 1958 onwards. The Schmidt–Rubin rifles were a series of Swiss Army service rifles in use between 1889 and 1958. They are distinguished by the straight-pull bolt action invented by Rudolf Schmidt and use Eduard Rubin's 7.5×55mm Schmidt–Rubin rifle cartridge. Adolf Furrer (born Johann Adolf Furrer-Kägi, November 13, 1873 – January 15, 1958) was a Swiss military officer and small arms designer. Eduard Rubin
Eduard Alexander Rubin (17 July 1846 – 6 July 1920) was a Swiss mechanical engineer who is most notable for having invented the full metal jacket bullet in 1882. His most famous cartridge was the 7.5×55mm Swiss which was the standard ammunition for the Schmidt–Rubin, K31 and Stgw 57 military rifles. Bolt-action is a type of manual firearm action that is operated by ''directly'' manipulating the bolt via a bolt handle, which is most commonly placed on the right-hand side of the weapon (as most users are right-handed).
