Křižany
Křižany (german: Kriesdorf) is a municipality and village in Liberec District in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 800 inhabitants. Administrative parts The village of Žibřidice is an administrative part of Křižany. Geography Křižany is located about west of Liberec. In lies mostly in the Ralsko Uplands, only the eastern part of the municipal territory extends into the Ještěd–Kozákov Ridge. The highest point is the hill Malý Ještěd at above sea level. The built-up area is situated in the valley of the stream Ještědský potok. History The first written mention of Křižany is from 1352. Until 1684, there was a fortress. Demographics Transport Křižany is located on the railway line Liberec–Děčín. Sights The main landmark of Křižany is the Church of Saint Maximilian. Josef Vacke
Josef Vacke (18 July 1907 – 18 December 1987), born Josef Watzke, was a Czech artist and painter. Family Writer Vladimír Watzke and painter Josef Vacke were brothers. Both were the children of Karel Watzke and Anna Zyka ("Zyka" was a pseudonym that Vladimír used as his most common pseudonym). They had 3 children; Vladimír Watzke was born in 1900, Karel Watzke was born in 1902 and Josef Watzke (Vacke) was born in 1907. Vladimir Watzke was a very prolific writer of Czech fiction books, primarily fantasy and science fiction, who was highly popular in his time (thirties and forties). Biography Josef Vacke was born during the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, into a family that identified as Czech, but was of German extraction on the paternal side. Kryštofovo Údolí
Kryštofovo Údolí (german: Christofsgrund) is a municipality and village in Liberec District in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 400 inhabitants. The village is well preserved and is protected by law as a Cultural monument (Czech Republic)#Monument zones, village monument zone. Administrative parts The village of Novina is an administrative part of Kryštofovo Údolí. Etymology The name means "Kryštof's valley (Christopher's valley)". It was probably named after Kryštof of Donín (German: Christoph von Dohna), who owned the area and is one of the possible founders of the village. Martin Chaloupka's Astronomical Clock
Martin Chaloupka's astronomical clock is an astronomical clock in Liberec District, Czech Republic. It was built in 2006–2011 in Kryštofovo Údolí, and was moved to Žibřidice (in the obec of Křižany) in 2023. The clock's construction was directed by Martin Chaloupka. History The clock was originally installed in a former electrical substation in Kryštofovo Údolí. The project started in 2006, it was inaugurated on 20 September 2008, and completed in 2011. In 2023, the owner of the clock (Martin Chaloupka's daughter Alice Chmelíková) decided to move the clock to the former fire station in Žibřidice. Ralsko Uplands
Ralsko (german: Roll) is a town in Česká Lípa District in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 2,100 inhabitants. It comprises area of the former military training area with Hradčany Air Base. Because of the former military area, the town's municipal territory is the fourth largest in the country, after the cities of Prague, Brno and Ostrava. Ještěd–Kozákov Ridge
The Ještěd–Kozákov Ridge (; cs, Ještědsko-kozákovský hřbet) is a ridge and geomorphological mesoregion of the Czech Republic. It is part of the Western Sudetes. The vast majority lies in the Liberec Region. Geomorphology Ještěd–Kozákov Ridge is a mesoregion of the Western Sudetes, which is part of the Sudetes within the Bohemian Massif. It is a distinctive horst and anticline ridge. It is further subdivided into the microregions of Ještěd Ridge and Kozákov Ridge. Ještěd–Kozákov Ridge is named after the two highest and most dominant mountains of its two parts, Ještěd in the northwest part and Kozákov in the southeast. Liberec
