Käraste Bröder Systrar och Vänner (Dearest Brothers, Sisters and Friends) is Epistle No. 9 in the Swedish poet and performer Carl Michael Bellman's 1790 song collection, '' Fredman's Epistles''. The epistle is subtitled with the dedication "''Til Gumman på Thermopolium Boreale och hännes Jungfrur.''" ("To the old Woman at Thermopolium Boreale and her Maidens"), Barbara Ekenberg. It describes the fictional Jean Fredman's cheerful world of brandy, women, and dance, in the setting of a tavern which is halfway to a brothel. The song ends with Fredman's credo, a celebration of everything that is delightful in life. Background Song Music and verse form The Epistle was written in the spring of 1770. The melody was initially thought to have been based on the 1768 French ''air du drapeau'' called "Tout n'est que vanité" from Bonafos de la Tour's ''Cantiques'', but Bellman's ''timbre'' "Menuet" shows that he was using an instrumental tune, not a sung canticle. Elis Chiewitz (pronounced ''tje:vits''), born 13 April 1784 in Stockholm, died 24 June 1839 in Hammarlund, Åland, was a Swedish musician and artist. Biography Elis Chiewitz was the son of the court chapel violinist and Christina Elisabeth Runius. He was the brother of and the uncle of Georg Theodor Chiewitz. He studied music and already as a young cellist gave concerts, including at the court chapel. He began his art studies at the Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1801; despite encouragement and several medals he remained as a student as late as 1820. He participated several times in the academy's exhibitions with genre pictures, landscape and historical scenes in oils or watercolour. Fred Åkerström
Fred Åkerström (27 January 1937 – 9 August 1985) was a Swedish folk guitarist and singer particularly noted for his interpretations of Carl Michael Bellman's music, and his own work of the typically Swedish song segment named ''visa''. These songs, ''visor'', are traditionally very narrative and the performance is "acted" to some degree. The singer is in context a ''vissångare'', a troubadour character. Åkerström was also known for his actor's interpretations of Bellman's 18th century material, and his unusual ability to reach deep bass notes (especially on his interpretation of Bellman's song ''Glimmande nymf''). Mikael Gustaf Lennart Samuelson (born 9 March 1951) is a Swedish baritone opera singer, actor, and composer. Carl Michael Bellman (; 4 February 1740 – 11 February 1795) was a Swedish songwriter, composer, musician, poet and entertainer. He is a central figure in the Swedish song tradition and remains a powerful influence in Swedish music, as well as in Scandinavian literature, to this day. He has been compared to Shakespeare, Beethoven, Mozart, and Hogarth, but his gift, using elegantly rococo classical references in comic contrast to sordid drinking and prostitution—at once regretted and celebrated in song—is unique. Carina Burman
Carina Burman (born 1960) is a Swedish novelist and literature scholar. Her research has been focused on Swedish 18th and 19th century literature. She completed her Ph.D. in literature in Uppsala in 1988 with a dissertation on the Gustavian writer Johan Henric Kellgren. Later production includes a critical edition of previously unpublished letters of the novelist and feminist pioneer Fredrika Bremer in two volumes (1996) and a biography of Bremer (2001). Together with her husband, Professor Lars Burman, she has published critical editions on behalf of the Swedish Academy of the works of Johan Henric Kellgren (1995), Fredrika Bremer's "Livet i gamla världen. Palestina" (1995) and the poetic works of Erik Gustaf Geijer (1999). Carina and Lars Burman have also edited Bremer's "Grannarne" for the series of Swedish literature published by Svenska Vitterhetssamfundet (2000).
