Kyote
Kyote is an unincorporated community in Atascosa County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 34 in 2000. It is located within the San Antonio metropolitan area. History The Kyote post office opened in 1927. Postmaster William D. Rogers named it after the area's coyote population. This alternate spelling was chosen due to a similarly named community elsewhere in Texas, although the other place was spelled Cayote. The post office closed in 1935; by this point, the community also had one business and ten residents. The population spiked to fifty in 1951 after oil was discovered nearby. A 1964 county highway map showed a few scattered houses at the northern edge of the oilfield, but in 1984, it was still listed on county maps, but there were no buildings at the site. Atascosa County ( ) is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is in South Texas and its county seat is Jourdanton. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 48,981. Atascosa County is part of the San Antonio-New Braunfels, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cayote, Texas
Cayote (also Coyote) is an unincorporated community in Bosque County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 75 in 2000. History John Cox built a grocery store two miles south of the Cayote town site in 1866–67; after he sold it in 1870, the new owners moved it to the town site. The owners called their town Coyote after the many coyotes living in the area; a later spelling mistake gave the town its current name. A post office opened at Cayote in 1879, and the town later grew to include a gristmill and cotton gin. In the 1890s, the community reached its peak population of 100. The post office closed the following decade. Cayote's population fell to 25 by 1933 but climbed to 75 over the next ten years; it has remained at 75 since. State Highway 173 (SH 173) is a state highway that runs for from Jourdanton to Kerrville in south Texas, traversing through the Texas Hill Country. History The highway was originally designated on August 4, 1932 from Hondo southeast to Devine. On October 26, 1932, it extended southeast to Pleasanton. On January 11, 1933, it was rerouted to end in Jourdanton. On October 16, 1933, this section from Devine to Jourdanton was cancelled. On May 14, 1935, it extended back to Jourdanton. On July 15, 1935, SH 173 was cancelled. On September 3, 1935, a road from Devine to Jourdanton was being investigated for preparation for restoration of this section of SH 173. Coyote
The coyote (''Canis latrans'') is a species of canis, canine native to North America. It is smaller than its close relative, the wolf, and slightly smaller than the closely related eastern wolf and red wolf. It fills much of the same ecological niche as the golden jackal does in Eurasia. The coyote is larger and more predatory and was once referred to as the American jackal by a behavioral ecologist.
