Kyoko Iriye Selden
Kyoko Iriye Selden (入江, 恭子; 1936–2013) was a Japanese scholar of Japanese language and literature and a translator. Biography Kyoko Iriye was born in Tokyo. Her father was a journalist reporting from Paris and Shanghai, and her mother was an English teacher. She attended Seikei High School, and wrote a thesis on Wordsworth at the University of Tokyo, before studying English Literature on a Fulbright Scholarship at Yale University. She taught at Cornell University for twenty-five years, and was a literary translator. She was married to Mark Selden, with whom she had three children and four grandchildren. Tomioka Taeko
Taeko Tomioka (, ''Tomioka Taeko''; born July 28, 1935) is a Japanese writer. She was born in Osaka, was educated at Osaka Women's College, worked as a high school English teacher and moved to Tokyo in 1960. Tomioka visited New York City in 1964 and returned home to Japan in 1966. In 1969, she married Suga Kishio. Tomioka published several collections of poems. ''Henrei'' (1958) won the Mr. H Prize (H-shi Shō), awarded by the Association of Contemporary Japanese Poets. ''Monogatari no akuru hi'' (1961) received the 'Muro Saisei Prize. Tomioka also wrote a poetical drama ''Matsuri'' (1959) and a screenplay ''Shinju ten no Amijima'' (Double suicide, 1968). In 1971, she published the novel ''Oka ni mukatte hito wa narabu'' (Facing the Hills they stand). In 1974, Tomioka wrote ''Shokubutsu sai'', which received the Tamura Toshiko Prize. Akiko Akazome
, born , was a Japanese writer. Akazome won the 143rd Akutagawa Prize and the 99th Bungakukai Prize before her death in 2017. Biography Akazome graduated from the Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, where she studied German, in 1996. She entered graduate school at Hokkaido University intending to become an academic, but instead started writing stories that reflected her Kyoto upbringing. In 2004 Akazome won the 99th Bungakukai Prize for her story "Hatsuko-san," which was later published in book form as '. Her 2010 book ', about a group of women in a German class reading Anne Frank's ''The Diary of a Young Girl'', generated controversy for using a casual writing style to discuss serious subject matter.
