Kyoji Saito
Kyōji Saitō (齋藤 恭司, Saitō Kyōji; born 25 December 1944) is a Japanese mathematician, specializing in algebraic geometry and complex analytic geometry. Education and career Saito received in 1971 his promotion Ph.D. from the University of Göttingen under Egbert Brieskorn, with thesis ''Quasihomogene isolierte Singularitäten von Hyperflächen'' (Quasihomogeneous isolated singularities of hypersurfaces). Saito is a professor at the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) of Kyoto University. Saito's research deals with the interplay among Lie algebras, reflection groups (Coxeter groups), braid groups, and singularities of hypersurfaces. From the 1980s, he did research on underlying symmetries of period integrals in complex hypersurfaces. Saito introduced higher-dimensional generalizations of elliptic integrals. Mirror Symmetry (string Theory)
In algebraic geometry and theoretical physics, mirror symmetry is a relationship between geometric objects called Calabi–Yau manifolds. The term refers to a situation where two Calabi–Yau manifolds look very different geometrically but are nevertheless equivalent when employed as extra dimensions of string theory. Early cases of mirror symmetry were discovered by physicists. Mathematicians became interested in this relationship around 1990 when Philip Candelas, Xenia de la Ossa, Paul Green, and Linda Parkes showed that it could be used as a tool in enumerative geometry, a branch of mathematics concerned with counting the number of solutions to geometric questions. Candelas and his collaborators showed that mirror symmetry could be used to count rational curves on a Calabi–Yau manifold, thus solving a longstanding problem. Bernard Teissier
Bernard Teissier (; born 1945) is a French mathematician and a member of the Nicolas Bourbaki group. He has made major contributions to algebraic geometry and commutative algebra, specifically to singularity theory, multiplicity theory and valuation theory. Teissier attained his doctorate from Paris Diderot University in 1973, under supervision of Heisuke Hironaka. He was a member and a leading figure of Nicolas Bourbaki. Along with Alain Connes, he gave the 1975/1976 Peccot Lectures. He was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematics at Warsaw in 1983. Katsumi Nomizu
was a Japanese-American mathematician known for his work in differential geometry. Life and career Nomizu was born in Osaka, Japan on the first day of December, 1924. He studied mathematics at Osaka University, graduating in 1947 with a Master of Science then traveled to the United States on a U.S. Army Fulbright Scholarship. He studied first at Columbia University and then at the University of Chicago where in 1953 he became the first student to earn a Ph.D. under the thesis direction of Shiing-Shen Chern. The subject was affine differential geometry, a topic to which he would return much later in his career. He presented his thesis, ''Invariant affine connections on homogeneous spaces'' in 1953. Returning to Japan, he studied at Nagoya University, obtaining a doctor of science in 1955. Wilfried Schmid
Wilfried Schmid (born May 28, 1943) is a German-American mathematician who works in Hodge theory, representation theory, and automorphic forms. After graduating as valedictorian of Princeton University's class of 1964, Schmid earned his Ph.D. at University of California, Berkeley in 1967 under the direction of Phillip Griffiths, and then taught at Berkeley and Columbia University, becoming a full professor at Columbia at age 27. Björn Engquist (also ''Bjorn Engquist''; born 2 June 1945 in Stockholm) has been a leading contributor in the areas of multiscale modeling and scientific computing, and a productive educator of applied mathematicians. Life He received his PhD in numerical analysis from University of Uppsala in 1975, and taught there during the following years while also holding a professorship at the University of California, Los Angeles. Masaki Kashiwara
is a Japanese mathematician. He was a student of Mikio Sato at the University of Tokyo. Kashiwara made leading contributions towards algebraic analysis, microlocal analysis, D-module, ''D''-module theory, Hodge theory, sheaf theory and representation theory. Kashiwara and Sato established the foundations of the theory of systems of linear partial differential equations with analytic coefficients, introducing a cohomological approach that follows the spirit of Grothendieck's theory of scheme (mathematics), schemes. The Mathematical Society of Japan (MSJ, ja, 日本数学会) is a learned society for mathematics in Japan. Hiroaki Terao
is a Japanese mathematician, known as, with Peter Orlik and Louis Solomon, a pioneer of the theory of arrangements of hyperplanes. He was awarded a Mathematical Society of Japan Algebra Prize in 2010.
