Kwinana Waste To Energy Plant
The Kwinana Waste to Energy Plant is a Waste-to-energy plant, waste-to-energy power station under construction in Kwinana Beach, Western Australia. Once completed, the facility is scheduled to process in excess of of waste and will produce 36 MW of power. Background At the time of project approval, Australia generated 23 million tonnes of waste to landfill every year, with the state of Western Australia having the lowest waste recovery and highest waste generation rate per capita in the country. The geography of Perth, situated on a sandy coastal plain and relying heavily on groundwater as a source of potable water, meant new landfill sites were unlikely to be approved in the metropolitan region and existing ones were nearing capacity. As a consequence, the Government of Western Australia encouraged local councils to end their dependency on landfills by the year 2020 as the practice was not sustainable. Kwinana Beach, Western Australia
Kwinana Beach is an outer southwestern suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Kwinana. It is one of the traditional industrial suburbs in the Perth metropolitan region. History Kwinana is originally a local indigenous Australian word meaning either "young woman" or "pretty maiden". The ship was wrecked on Cockburn Sound in 1922, and blown on to the beach. The nearby area acquired the name Kwinana Beach when the local postmistress, Clara Wells, immediately started labeling the mail sacks "Kwinana Wreck", to distinguish the settlement there from Rockingham, to the south.
