Kvæsthusgade
Kvæsthusgade is a short street in the Nyhavn Quarter of central Copenhagen, Denmark. It runs from the mouth of the Nyhavn canal in the south to Ofelia Plads in the north. The rear side of the Royal Danish Playhouse dominates the east side of the street. The Zinn House at No. 3 and the neighbouring building at No. 5 are both listed in the Danish registry of protected buildings and places. History The street takes its name after the Kvæsthus, a military hospital, which relocated to the site in 1680. It is known that a hospital for boatsmen was founded in 1618 and it was then most likely situated at the Church of Holmen. It was moved to Gothersgade in 1628 and again in 1658 to Sejlhuset at Bremerholm. In 1668, the hospital moved to Børnehuset in Christianshavn and in 1675 to Guldhuset in Rigensgade. Kvæsthusgade 5 is a historic property in Kvæsthusgade, a short street between the Nyhavn canal and Sankt Annæ Plads, in central Copenhagen, Denmark. The building is listed in ht Danish registry of protected buildings and places. History 18th century The site was part of a larger property in the late 17th century. This property was listed as No. 22 in St. Ann's East Quarter in Copenhagen's first cadastre of 1689. Zinn House
The Zinn House ( da, Zinnske Gård), located at Kvæsthusgade 3, is a historic townhouse around the corner from the Nyhavn Canal in central Copenhagen, Denmark. It takes its name after the Johann Ludvig Zinn, Zinn family, a wealthy family of merchants that owned it for more than 150 years. The composer Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann, who was married to Emma Hartmann, Emma Sophie Amalie Zinn, a grand daughter of Johann Ludvig Zinn, lived on the second floor for more than 70 years in the period 1829–1900. The building was adapted in 1907. It was later in the century converted into offices. The building was listed on the Listed buildings in Copenhagen Municipality, Danish registry of protected buildings and places in 1959. Johann Ludvig Zinn
Johann Ludvig Zinn (14 September 1734 – 3 February 1802) was a German-Danish merchant who founded a trading house in Copenhagen in 1765 and died as one of the wealthiest men in the city. Zinn lived in the Zinn House at Kvæsthusgade 3 in Copenhagen. His daughter, Sophie Dorothea Zinn, wrote about her father in her memoirs, ''Grandma's Confessions'' (). Early life and education Zinn was born in Mainbernheim in Bavaria. His parents were Johann Friederich Zinn and Dorothea Barbara Zinn, née Kreis. It is unclear whether he was related to the renowned botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn (1727–1759), who came from the same region (Ansbach) and who gave his name to the Zinnia flower. Career and public life Instigated by Johan Friederich Wewer, Zinn came to Denmark in 1757 where he initially worked for Fabritius & Wewer. Hans Van Steenwinckel The Youngest
Hans van Steenwinckel the Youngest (1639–1700) was a Danish architect and sculptor, son of Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger and grandson of Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, he became a Royal Building Master in 1669. Around 1680 he also became Naval Building Master at Holmen, replacing Ewert Janssen. Principal works Prince George's Palace From 1671-73 van Steenwinckel destroyed Prince George's Palace in Vordingborg. Ut was an elegant Baroque palace, built for Prince George of Denmark on the ruins of Vordingborg Castle which had been destroyed by the Swedish in the Northern Wars a decade earlier.
