Kurilpa was a Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Legislative Assembly Electoral districts of Queensland, electorate in the states and territories of Australia, state of Queensland from 1912 to 1986. It was named for the Kurilpa Peninsula on the Brisbane River. Until 1960, it was based in the inner southern Brisbane suburbs of West End, Queensland, West End and the western parts of South Brisbane, Queensland, South Brisbane, but after that, it also included Dutton Park, Queensland, Dutton Park, Fairfield, Queensland, Fairfield, Highgate Hill, Queensland, Highgate Hill and parts of Yeronga, Queensland, Yeronga and Annerley, Queensland, Annerley. West End is an inner southern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , West End had a population of 14,730 people. The Aboriginal name for the area is ''Kurilpa'', which means ''place of the water rat''. Geography Geographically, West End is bounded by the median of the Brisbane River to the west and the south. Hill End is a neighbourhood () within West End in the south-west of the suburb near the Brisbane River. West End is adjacent to the suburbs of South Brisbane and Highgate Hill. These three suburbs make up a peninsula of the Brisbane River. History Before the arrival of Europeans in West End, there was an important habitual Aboriginal camp in the area around the upper part of Musgrave Park where Brisbane State High School now stands. The Kurilpa Bridge (originally known as the Tank Street Bridge) is a 63 million pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the Brisbane River in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The bridge connects Kurilpa Point in South Brisbane to Tank Street in the Brisbane central business district. In 2011, the bridge was judged World Transport Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival. Baulderstone built the bridge and the company's design team included Cox Rayner Architects and Arup Engineers. A sod turning ceremony was held at Kurilpa Park, South Brisbane on 12 December 2007. The bridge was opened on 4 October 2009 by Queensland Premier Anna Bligh. Structure Kurilpa Bridge is the world's largest hybrid tensegrity bridge.
