Kurfürstendamm
The Kurfürstendamm (; colloquially , ; ) is one of the most famous avenues in Berlin. The street takes its name from the former (prince-electors) of Brandenburg. The broad, long boulevard can be considered the of Berlin and is lined with shops, houses, hotels and restaurants. In particular, many fashion designers have their shops there, as well as several car manufacturers' show rooms. Description The avenue includes four lines of plane trees and runs for through the city. It branches off from the Breitscheidplatz, where the ruins of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church stand, and leads southwestward up to the district of Grunewald. At the junction with it passes the Café Kranzler, successor of the , a famous venue for artists and bohémiens of the pre–World War I era. Uhlandstraße (Berlin U-Bahn)
Uhlandstraße is the western terminus station of line U1 of the Berlin U-Bahn. It is located on Kurfürstendamm in the central Charlottenburg quarter of Berlin, among a mix of chain and high end shopping facilities. History The station opened on 12 October 1913 at the intersection of Kurfürstendamm and Uhlandstraße, named after the poet Ludwig Uhland. Built according to plans designed by Alfred Grenander, it was meant to be the first section of a projected metro line connecting Wittenbergplatz with Berlin-Halensee station which was never built. Damaged by the bombing of Berlin in World War II, the station was closed briefly in 1945; it went out of service again for four years in 1957, because of the construction of the neighbouring Kurfürstendamm station. Breitscheidplatz
Breitscheidplatz () is a major public square in the inner city of Berlin, Germany. Together with the Kurfürstendamm boulevard, it marks the centre of former West Berlin and the present-day City West. It is named after Rudolf Breitscheid. Location Breitscheidplatz lies within the Charlottenburg district near the southwestern tip of the Tiergarten park and the Zoological Garden at the corner of Kurfürstendamm and its eastern continuation, Tauentzienstraße, leading to Schöneberg and the Kaufhaus des Westens on Wittenbergplatz. Kurfürstendamm (Berlin U-Bahn)
Kurfürstendamm is an underground station on lines U1 and U9 of the Berlin U-Bahn. It opened on 28 August 1961, when the first section of the U9 between Spichernstraße and Leopoldplatz was inaugurated. As there had originally been no stop on the U1 where it now crossed the U9, the line received an additional station here. It lies in eastern Charlottenburg at the intersection of Kurfürstendamm and Joachimsthaler Straße, south of the Berlin Zoological Garden and its adjoining railway station. Swissôtel Berlin
The Swissôtel Berlin was a luxury hotel in Berlin, Germany. The hotel overlooked the crossing of the ''Kurfürstendamm'' shopping avenue with ''Joachimstaler Straße'', in the city's Charlottenburg quarter. Both the Berlin Zoologischer Garten railway station, Zoo railway station and Kurfürstendamm (Berlin U-Bahn), Kurfürstendamm U-Bahn station were nearby. Charlottenburg
Charlottenburg () is a Boroughs and localities of Berlin, locality of Berlin within the borough of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Established as a German town law, town in 1705 and named after Sophia Charlotte of Hanover, Queen consort of Kingdom of Prussia, Prussia, it is best known for Charlottenburg Palace - the largest surviving such royal palace in Berlin - and the adjacent museums. Charlottenburg was an independent city to the west of Berlin until 1920 when it was incorporated into "Greater Berlin Act, Groß-Berlin" (Greater Berlin) and transformed into a borough. Tauentzienstraße, or Tauentzienstrasse (see ß; colloquially: ''der Tauentzien''; ), is a major shopping street in the City West area of Berlin, Germany. Halensee
Halensee () is a ''locality'' (''Ortsteil'') of Berlin in the district (''Bezirk'') of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. Halensee was established as a villa and tenement settlement in about 1880, in the suburb of Wilmersdorf, which became part of Greater Berlin in 1920. In 2004, Halensee became its own ''Ortsteil''. Café Kranzler
Café Kranzler is a famous coffeehouse in Berlin, Germany. Opened in 1834 on the Unter den Linden boulevard in the central Mitte district, its Western branch on Kurfürstendamm in Charlottenburg became an icon of West Berlin after World War II. History In 1825 the Austrian-born confectionist Johann Georg Kranzler (1795–1866) began business in a small pastry shop (''Konditorei'') on Unter den Linden No. 25, at the corner of Friedrichstraße (present-day site of The Westin Grand). Refurbished as a coffeehouse according to plans designed by the architect Friedrich August Stüler, the original Café Kranzler was opened in 1834. Including a sun terrace, outside tables on the pavement, an ice-cream parlour and a smokers' room, it swiftly gained the reputation of being one of the city's finest cafés, also after the rivalling Café Bauer opened vis-à-vis in 1877.
