KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art is located in Aalborg, Denmark, on Kong Christians Allé near its junction with Vesterbro. Of a modern Scandinavian design, it was built between 1968 and 1972 by Finnish architects Elissa and Alvar Aalto and Danish architect Jean-Jacques Baruël. It was completed on 8 June 1972. The museum has been termed a "showplace for 20th-century Danish and international art", as it showcases both domestic and international modern art collections. It is described as "strikingly contemporary in both form and content". History The architectural plans for designing the museum were selected from the 144 submissions made to the Nordic architectural competition by 15 January 1958. Aalborg
Aalborg (, , ) is Denmark's fourth largest town (behind Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Odense) with a population of 119,862 (1 July 2022) in the town proper and an urban population of 143,598 (1 July 2022). Sonja Ferlov Mancoba
Sonja Ferlov Mancoba (1 November 1911 – 17 December 1984) was a Danish avant-garde sculptor. Biography She attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was affiliated with the CoBrA group, along with her husband, South African artist Ernest Mancoba. Ferlov Mancoba was trained as a painter. She studied under Bizzie Høyer from 1930 to 1932 and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1933 to 1935. She debuted at the annual Artists' Autumn Salon (Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling) in 1935 with two plaster sculptures, ''Bird with Young'' and ''Two Living Beings''. From the mid-1930s she was involved with the artists' group and art journal ''Linien'' (The Line, 1934–39), which was the first conduit of French Surrealism to Denmark. Edvard Weie
Viggo Thorvald Edvard Weie (18 November 1879 - 9 April 1943) was a Danish Modernist painter. He was a recipient of Eckersberg Medal in 1925. He died during 1943 in Frederiksberg. Biography Weie was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father went away when Edvard was still very young and left his family in poverty. To help out, he would deliver newspapers every morning before school and later worked as a house painter. Despite the hardship, he was able to take art lessons. When he came of age, he went to Copenhagen to apply for admission to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, but was not accepted. Vilhelm Lundstrøm
Vilhelm Lundstrøm (26 May 1893 – 9 May 1950) was a Danish modernist painter. He was a central figure in early Danish experimental art and introduced French cubism to Denmark. Biography Vilhelm Henry Lundstrøm was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Art where he studied under Rostrup Böyesen. He made his debut in 1918 at the Artists' Autumn Exhibition at Den Frie Udstilling in Copenhagen and participated in the exhibition Modern Art in the Art Pavilion in Aarhus. Lundstrøm spent an extended period in France in the 1920s where he was influenced by Braque, Picasso and Cézanne. Together with fellow artists Karl Larsen, Axel Salto and Svend Johansen, Lundstrøm settled in Bormes near Cannes and established the artistic group ''De Fire''. Wilhelm Freddie
Wilhelm Freddie, born Christian Frederik Wilhelm Carlsen (7 February 1909 – 26 October 1995) was a Danish painter, sculptor and filmmaker. Initially working along a somewhat abstract line, he soon turned towards a more realistic surrealism, only to later return to abstract art. Some of his works were highly controversial and considered pornographic at their time, resulting in confiscation of the works and his imprisonment though his artistic merits were later recognized. Some of Freddie's works criticized Nazism and fascism, like the 1936 paintings ''Meditation on the Anti-Nazi Love'' and ''Phénomène psychophotographique'', and his 1938 exhibition ''Surreal-Sex''. Victor Isbrand
Victor Isbrand (1897 – 1989) was a Danish painter. Biography Isbrand was born on 6 July 1897 in Copenhagen. From 1913 to 1917 Isbrand studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and from 1930 to 1967, he taught drawing at the School of Applied Arts in Copenhagen and influenced young artists and craftsmen, including among others Nanna Ditzel. His style is inspired by the Cubist movement; he painted portraits and urban landscapes as well as watercolors landscapes from the south of France. From 1916 to 1987, his works were exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts: Kunsthal Charlottenborg. His best known work is ''Aphrodite and Eros''. Asger Jorn
Asger Oluf Jorn (3 March 1914 – 1 May 1973) was a Danish painter, sculptor, ceramic artist, and author. He was a founding member of the avant-garde movement COBRA and the Situationist International. He was born in Vejrum, in the northwest corner of Jutland, Denmark, and baptized Asger Oluf Jørgensen. The largest collection of Jorn's works—including his major work ''Stalingrad''—can be seen in the Museum Jorn, Silkeborg, Denmark. Jorn willed his property and the works of art located inside to the Municipality of Albissola Marina (Savona), so the Italian museum called "Casa Museo Jorn" was created for displaying his works. Carl-Henning Pedersen
Carl-Henning Pedersen (23 September 1913 – 20 February 2007) was a Danish painter and a key member of the COBRA movement. He was known as the "Scandinavian Chagall", and was one of the leading Danish artists of the second half of the 20th century. Biography Pedersen was born in Copenhagen and brought up in the poor area near Vigerslev Alle. He held radical political beliefs. He joined the International Folk High School in Elsinore in 1933, where he met self-taught painter Else Alfelt. They married in 1934, and their first daughter, Vibeke Alfelt, was born later that year. Robert Jacobsen
Robert Julius Tommy Jacobsen (4 June 1912 – 26 January 1993) was a Danish sculptor and painter. The Danish Robert Award is named in his honor. Biography Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen. He was self-taught as a sculptor. During World War I, he worked with Danish modernist artists such as Asger Jorn, Carl-Henning Pedersen and Egill Jacobsen. They participated in the circle around the journal ''Helhesten'' and would later come to make up the COBRA-movement. Although Jacobsen had a connection with the CoBrA artists, but he never was a member of their group. Richard Mortensen
Richard Mortensen (23 October 1910 – 6 January 1993) was a Danish painter. Biography Richard Strange Mortensen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. He studied between 1931 and 1932 at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. Influenced by the works of Wassily Kandinsky, he developed an abstract art style. In Copenhagen, Mortensen was joint founder of the "Linien" school of abstract painters. In 1937, he undertook a study trip to Paris, where he met pioneers of surrealism, such as Salvador Dalí, Roger Vitrac, Gala Éluard, Michel Leiris, Antonin Artaud, Raymond Queneau and André Masson. Willy Ørskov
Willy Ørskov (21 December 1920 in Aarhus – 12 June 1990 in Helsingør) was a Danish sculptor who is remembered for works created from plastics and inflatable materials. Biography Ørskov's studies at the Valand School of Fine Arts in Gothenburg, Sweden (1954–1960) were completed by stays in Paris, Greece and Italy at the end of the 1950s.
