Kumudini Welfare Trust
Kumudini Welfare Trust is one of the oldest and largest charitable organisations in Bangladesh and is located in Tangail District. History Ranadaprasad Saha, philanthropist and businessman, founded the charity in 1947 in Bengal as Kumudini Welfare Trust of Bengal. It was named after his mother Kumudini. From 1971 to 1999 the trust was managed by Saha's daughter, Joya Pati. From 2000 Rajiv Prashad Shaha, the grandson of Ranadaprasad Saha, has headed the trust. Tangail ( bn, টাঙ্গাইল জেলা) formerly a small Mohokuma of Greater Mymensingh district is a district (''zila'') in the central region of Bangladesh. In 1969, Tangail district was created by Tangail Mohokuma from its 237 square kilometers of its land and 3177 square kilometers of land from Mymensingh district. It is the largest district of Dhaka division by area and second largest by population (after Dhaka district). The population of Tangail zila is about 3.8 million and its area is . Ranadaprasad Saha
Ranadaprasad Shaha (also RP Shaha; 15 November 1896 – May 1971) was a Bangladeshi businessman and philanthropist. He founded educational institutes like Bharateswari Homes, Kumudini College and Debendra College. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, he was picked up from home by the Pakistani army on 7 May 1971 and never returned. Early life Saha was born on 15 November 1896. Debendranath Podder, Saha's father, originated from Mirzapur in Tangail subdivision in Mymensingh District. Saha was born in his maternal uncle's house at Kachhur in Savar, near Dhaka. At the age of seven, he lost his mother, Kumudini Devi, who died of tetanus during childbirth. At the age of sixteen, he fled to Kolkata and initially worked as a day labourer, rickshaw-puller and hawker. Career Saha joined the Bengal Ambulance Corps and went to the World War I. Kumudini Hospital
Kumudini Hospital is private hospital in Tangail that is managed by Kumudini Welfare Trust. The hospital is funded by the trust and provides healthcare (not free). History Kumudini Hospital was founded in 1938 by Ranadaprasad Saha in Mirzapur Upazila, Tangail District on the banks of Louhajang River. It started operations on 27 July 1944. It was inaugurated by Richard Casey, Baron Casey, the governor of Bengal. It originally started out with 20 beds. In 1970, the hospital started tuberculosis unit, the first such unit outside of Dhaka. The hospital has since been upgraded to a 750-bed facility. Ranadaprasad Saha, his son, and staff members of Kumudini hospital were killed by the Pakistan Army during the Bangladesh Liberation war. Bharateswari Homes
Bharateswari Homes is a boarding school for girls located in Mirzapur, Tangail District, Bangladesh. The school was established in 1945 by philanthropist Ranadaprasad Saha. He established the institution for the girls education and named it after his grandmother Bharateswari Devi. In 2020, the school was given Independence Day Award, the highest civilian honor of Bangladesh, for its contribution to education. History The institute belongs to Kumudini Welfare Trust of Bengal (BD) Ltd which also owns Kumudini Hospital and other institutes. The trust was founded Ranadaprasad Saha (RP Saha). The school started as ''Bharateswari Bidyapith'', a primary school. The foundation stone of Bharateswari Homes was laid on 2 January 1938 by Kiron Bala Saha, wife of RP Saha.
